Re: fewer listings for songwriters?
right on matt. I find myself having to ween myself off the forum sometimes to actually get to work on music but you all are the only people I know that are like minded in terms of wanting something more from music than playing for my friends and by myself in the living room. sometimes i get so discouraged I just want to hear what y'all are up to so I can get re-focused. strength in numbers kind of thing I guess

All good points... personally, I've come to view TAXI differently in the last couple of months... as a tool to help me write better songs and network with like-minded individuals.Although, if one of us writes that undeniable "killer" hit song I believe ML will take it to someone who matters and at least get a listen.Matt, I've got my gameface on too... putting my eye-black on right now...

There's no doubt that there is a fall off of interest in new songs .It would appear its all about recycling the old stuff. Chrysalis are now starting to make money again as a resurgence in interest in the 80's hits. So unless you were big 30 years ago - your dead in the water. Glastonbury was headlined by the Boss - well how cutting edge is that - precisley. Today its all about doing it yourself - set your website up then facebook - twitter and youtube as much as you can. Thats what we are going to do - stick it all up in the clouds cos I don't think half the people seeking tracks on here have got a clue what their doing. But what do I know !!!! www.taxi.com/nrjiffy

TAXI offers what they are asked for...with dwindling record sales and dwindling profits, I think there probably is also a dwindling demand for outside songwriters.Definitely the dwindling record sales have been bad for the "pure songwriter", not only because there are fewer opportunities (and hence listings) but also because there's less money to be madein the end, especially from an album cut where all you see is mechanicals. On the other hand there are always new opportunities. The "Idol" juggernaut has gotten a lot more non-writing artists signed than had previously been the case, and while the competition is brutal for the slots on the major countries' winner and runner up records, there is an Idol style competition in almost every imaginable country now...and not as many US A-list writers are going to be pitching their best songs to the Kazakhstani Idol, for example... Jason Blume had a really interesting class on that topic at last year's Road Rally.

There has to be a number of performers out there who would like to have great material to perform that's not necessarily the same old covers. I wonder if non-performing songwriters would get together and form a co-op of sorts and try to attract up and coming (or even not so up and coming) performers that don't necessarily write their own material. There would be an outlet to get the material performed and maybe even some sort of grass roots movement would start. After all, that's how the labels started back in the day, by developing talent on the performing and writing side.Just a random idea.Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

If someone could coach a team of maybe 5 - 10 people to create a broadcast quality product with videos & net presence, this could be a whole new world. I like it.

Heh. And here I was looking at the latest listings and thinking "geez, the instrumentals listings I can throw in for all seem to be diminishing..." Without being facetious, does everybody disappear on summer break in the US?

This time of year is when Christmas music is traditionally recorded, in the US. I think the fall TV season's next.

I nominate you, suzdoyle and coach debra! Steve can handle video production, Suz can do musical direction, Deb can spearhead the promotional arm, but y'all might maybe need a webpresence fourth leg to the stool, so to speak. (meaning stool in the furniture sense, to be sure)
