I put the kettle on, it didn't suit me.

Fun question... typically, since I usually write more instrumentals, or they at least start out that way, I'll sit down at my desk, open up a new session in Pro Tools, plug in my guitar and then do one of two things... If I'm writing for a specific listing then I'll pull up some songs by the artist that I'm trying to reference to get a feel for what they do. If I'm just writing for the fun of it, then I put my Guitar Rig 3 software on to one of the metal presets and start playing without thinking about what I'm doing. Sometimes something really cool comes out, sometimes I'll play for hours and none of it was worth saving.- Big Blue

Divine Inspiration, using Routine. I'm trying to get lots of "reps", but not necessarily trying to write more songs. That is, I'm spending much more time at it, and time seems to be a key factor in flattening the learning curve.

I'm definitely a routine guy, who needs coffee and when I've done those two things I am then ready to receive the divine inspiration.

I chose a combination of relentless routine and divine inspiration. (The substances are none of your business.) I've become a great believer in relentless routine...it warms you up for divine inspiration. Divine inspiration is a lot like love...if you just sit around wondering why it doesn't come, it never does. But if you get out in the world and do things, then it finds you when you least expect it.
