But sometimes in 4/4 a two beat measure will just force itself on you and that is the only way the piece sounds right to you. "Don't Let Me Down," by the Beatles is changing Time throughout.I have written pieces where the time change was natural and the only way which sounded right. I have also chopped out parts of measures to shorten songs. That was not natural, and those pieces eventually got changed to normal meter again.I agree to a certain extent, at least, you can tell when an odd meter thing happens naturally or when it's sort of forced so someone can say 'my song is in 15/8'. At the same time, I applaud people for trying to push the boundaries of popular music and make it more interesting. But it works best when you're just listening to a cool tune like (here's another one, 'Solsbury Hill', Peter Gabriel in 7/4) and you think back and go 'hey that song's in 7/4'. I like that sudden realization, and the challenge of playing interesting grooves like that.It also happens in old country songs, the 'Hillbilly beat' where they would just throw an extra beat in there to make room for the lyric.Elser

J. Thomas. That was such a great record --- why would someone change it to 4/4? Maybe they can't play in any other meter? Speaking of that, I love Johnny Cash, but did he ever do a song in 3/4? Now, "I Walk The Line" has some odd meter, but that's 'cause ol' Johnny would hum for a while until he found the proper key for the next verse! Hey --- how about "Siberian Khatru" by Yes! A lot of that is in 15/4. Ern

The Beatles: Baby's in Black. Lennon would introduce it on stage as "a waltz." Can you imagine a band saying that onstage now?

I think Bonham still is one of the all time great rock drummers and Jimmy Page, while not very technically proficient had a really creative musical brain. Count Black Dog sometime or Kashmir or analyze the harmony and melody on Dancin Days and you'll find alot of surprises, at least when considering the average pop music song.I think in the way they approached things you can hear alot of musical maturity and knowledge, I don't think they were just flying by the seat of their pants.Elser

Re: Fave Uptempo 3/4 Song?
Ever notice that the odd-meter stuff that sounds the most natural can be counted in either three or four? (meaning if you wait for it to come back around, that is) If you break it all down to subdivisions of the beat there are actually only two meters: three and two. I'm not a fan of numerology, but I find that rather comforting. Has anyone mentioned "Happiness is A Warm Gun", yet?
