New to Taxi Forums

Post by thecolonel » Wed Jul 23, 2008 2:23 pm

Hi all!I'm new to the Taxi forums and I am very interested in the way things work at Taxi. I've been researching Taxi for a long time and trying to decide if I want to join. Recently, I've gotten much more serious about my songwriting and music recording. I'm a guitar player by trade for the last 17 years and I'm teaching myself keys now. The listings are very very interesting and I was curious: Do most folks write for the listings or do you submit existing songs hoping that's what they're looking for? I'm thinking by approach will be to write for the listings...Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I want to be a productive member and provide good feedback and receive the same. Thanks!

Welcome. Both approaches are pretty common, but the folks that write to order tend to lean toward Dispatch listings, possibly to reduce competition, I think.

Hey TCWelcome aboard to the forum. I write to the listings because it gives me focus on WHAT to write. sometimes when I'm noodling around I'll write a track, but 98% of the time I'll be writing towards the listing, helps me focus too.I think dispatch is awesome - but only when you have a huge catalogue of a variety of stuff then you can take FULL advantage of it. Right now I'm building that catalogue up.Take CareB

Welcome Colonel. Honestly, I've been a member for a year and I submit a lot LESS often now than I used to because I've learned to pinpoint the listings better. Learning to target the listings is obviously a great exercise, because it will also get you to learn how to target specific artists and pitch outside of TAXI. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Thanks!Hi,In either case (writing new material or submitting existing material), they'll both work equally well if they hit the target of the listing. Personally I think it's easier to write something specifically for a listing, just with that listing in mind. I try to do that when I can, especially when the end result will also be usable elsewhere, inside or outside of Taxi. One of the things that I've gotten out of Taxi is just getting my music to the point where it's right for the listings. That was kind of a long process but over a period of time, my music "evolved" as a result of the screener critiques as well as comments from the other forum members.Good luck with your stuff and keep hanging around the forums!Dave

Welcome aboard Colonel.... both approaches work.... the deciding factor is how fast you can pump out tracks and what listing you are targeting... TV/Film guys seem to have more luck writing for a specific listing... because the listings for those can be very specific... Good luck....Peace, Geo

Thanks for the great welcome and all the tips everyone! I get excited just coming to this website. The state of my musical life right now allows me to concentrate a lot on writing new songs as opposed to only working on learning songs for a band, for example. I've been playing guitar for a long time and in the last few years have gotten better at making music on my computer, so I hope to be productive and also improve and become a better overall musician! It's great to "meet" people that are as passionate about music as I am!

Hi Colonel,Welcome to the forum. There are a great bunch of people here.I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, played keyboards for a number of years and have recently gotten serious about the songwriting. Personally, I'm going after the artist listings instead of the film and TV, which reduce my chances of success greatly I'm sure, but that's just where my interest happens to be right now. My plan is to build up a big enough catalog of good songs so that I have enough on the shelf I can submit for listings as they come up. Then, if my "big break" ever comes I'll have more than one song to pitch. Watching the listings regularly gives me an idea of the type of material being regularly requested and helps me target the type of material I need to be writing. I do plan to try writing for specific listings but haven't done that so far.Go for it!!Cameron
