Future of music?
Everything old is new again....Squids and I were talking about "Duffy" yesterday on the phone. Retro-soul is making a big comeback it seems....the trend started with Amy Whinehouse. I like the Drifter's vibe in this song. Last night, I was so inspired by listening to this, that I'm writing my own retro-soul type song. This might be a long term trend. What I really love about it is that it brings torch songs back...I am so sick of love songs where people 'triumph'.....bring back tortured tunes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhZ5-L9z ... re=related

Yeah, that's a fact. That's jes a dang good tune, Mercy. And the production is first-rate but I see they remixed it from when it was on my space earlier this year. Sounds even betta now. I'm all lovin that she moves like the gals usedta in the 60s, so cute! Her voice got on my nerves here and there but I hear others think that too so it's probably a love/hate thing.I freakin love that song though and now that Amy's on the path most dedicated to killing herself (po baby), we'll see more of Duffy and maybe a few more of these soul tunes hittin the charts. It'd be nice to see some of the guys here who've been rated "dated" and "not current" get their chance to shine. Heh.

When the 2 of you notice someone new and special like this, I always KNOW they're worth checking out. Please God, let more artists start recording songs like this. And please God, ask more people to notice!

Hey, Steve and Squiddy....here's an even more souped up version of "Mercy."It's just incredible. Music is back! Yep, Squid's 'us oldsters' got a lot to give now, we don't seem so dated.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoQwliMA ... re=related

This guy, is one of my favorite piano players. He only has one song on his Myspace site, but it's killer, and I think you might like it. Matt Rollings

Oh Man, is this trend right up your alley Squids, or what?Count me as one of those dated guys who would love to write some retro-soul. I was always sorry I missed the heyday of Motown and Amy Winehouse had already gotten me thinking about the potential for us "has beens" (or "never was" in my case). I actually wrote a Sam Cooke kind of song a couple months before I ever heard of Amy Winehouse but wasn't sure it had a market at the time.Matt Rollins used to be the house piano player at Mr. Lucky's, a huge country/western club in Phoenix, and later played for Lyle Lovett. I used to go Lucky's back in the early '80s just to hear him and try to learn some of his licks (without much success)and occasionally when I got the nerve up I'd go tell him how great he was. Very unassuming guy despite his huge talent. That's an awesome song on his myspace page.Cameron

I found out about Duffy when RLC music (aka Rachel) posted her number one UK hit "Mercy" perhaps two or three months ago. I knew as soon as I heard it that she was worth checking out. Have you listened to "Stepping Stone" - that one gets me every time. I know about the many different thoughts on Amy but I feel as though she and Duffy have opened a door for us girlie's. I love it and I feel comfortable singing the way they do. I gotta say, I'm leaning more toward this sort of stuff - I think this girl is just bloody brilliant and listen at that group, phew!!! BIG BEAT, certainly wins me over ...http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JyB4h1PhKv0 Linzi

I find this so exciting!Could it be that millions of people younger than 35 are about to discover this great style of music?
