New Kid

Post by cameron » Thu May 15, 2008 5:33 am

Hi all,Have been lurking on the forum for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join. I plan on joining Taxi as soon as I feel I have something worthy of submitting, but for now I'm just trying to learn and get better at my new craft. I've been writing off and on (mostly off) for a number of years but only recently gotten serious about it and decided to write songs that someone outside of my family might actually want to listen to! Is it OK to post songs for others to critique? If so, what the best way to go about it?I'm also curious about whether anyone has recommendations for musicians or services who I can have add their parts to my home recordings. Here's one I've seen: http://www.efiddler.com/recording.htm I play piano but it's hard to give a song a country feel without some guitar, pedal steel or fiddles. So far with just keyboard all my stuff is coming off soundling like something from Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection album, i.e. country... sort of.Thanks in advance,Cameron Earnshaw

Thanks for the tips Hummingbird. So just why is it that so many talented musicians and songwriters are Canadian? Cameron

Welcome to the forums Cameron. Your post reminds me very much of myself, I too play piano and keyboard and have only really had family hear my music. I haven't joined Taxi yet, I long to take the plunge but there's so much work still to do. Little by little you'll meet people here who are so amazingly helpful and hopefully things will start to fall into place for you...you'll see The only reason I joined a band was because I started to take music seriously in January. The only reason I might have made a little progress is because folks here have inspired me to do so. Nice to have you aboard, Lindsey

Hi Lindsey,Well you've been pretty helpful too. Thanks for that. I played in various country/rock bands for about a dozen years but got burned out and quit playing completely for seven or eight years. It's nice to be finally playing again just for the enjoyment, and now the songwriting bug has really bitten me. I've written about a half dozen songs since last summer and think perhaps I'm ready to test the waters and put some of them out there and see if they float.I'll put one or two up on peer-to-peer in the next couple days just to get some feedback. I also sent some into Jason Blume's critiquing service, so it will be interesting to see how what they say compares to the feedback I'll get here. I'm most worried about whether there's a current market for the kind of stuff I'm writing since I don't like most of the stuff I'm hearing on the radio these days. Thanks again,Cameron

Hi Cameron. Welcome aboard!Like you, I played for a decade, burnt out, quit for another decade and then started up again. Always wrote songs so it wasn't too strange to get started with Taxi. You'll find it jes as easy as me, gettin' to know folks around here. They're very nice, have great advice to keep you outta the quicksand and are very supportive. Lookin' forward to hearing your music and great to meet you!Squids

Thanks for the welcome Squids! Just trying to watch and learn and everyone's been great so far. Have already learned a lot just by reading (and listening) to the past posts.I just posted one of my songs in Peer to Peer so give it a listen if you get a chance. Cameron
