Does anybody have any experience writing lyrics for soul/funk/blues music? Would you mind letting me have a read? I'm looking into modern soul but haven't managed to get hold of any lyrics as of yet, would like a little study see. No problems if not, could be a long shot but thanks anyway.Lindsey

Re: Modern soul?
Um Lindsay.. which one? That is a pretty open ended question.I mean blues isn't much like soul, and soul is now sometimes urban and sometimes not, and it all depends on who is singing it what the heck it comes out like. There are "soul" singers out there that rap, and some who do R&B. The lyrics of somebody like Big Bill Broonzy are blues, but so are those of a bunch of young white guys. And almost anything can get funky or be done in a funk style (of which there are a bunch).

Ah OK, well then I guess I should go create my very own, unique style soul! Could just do with some guidelines and would definitely like to make contacts.

Linds, check out Erykah Badu. She is smoking hot and kind of a mix of all three genres. I'm sure you'll find a lot of her stuff on YouTube and you can probably Google any lyric. But she is a great one to look at...I love her stuff.

Lindsey,What kind of contacts? Guidelines for writing, arranging or pitching? Are you looking for singers or producers or songwriters?Yes, you can create your own brand--or niche. Amy Winehouse (with her producers) combined R&B old rock and rap for some of her tunes. Joan Obsborne does a variety of old rock and R&B cuts in a jazzy style (Rainy Night In Georgia or How Sweet It Is for instance). If you are taking this from the songwriter perspective, about all you can do realistically (unless you are a performer) is find artists that light up the THIS IS WHAT I MEAN BY FUNKY SOUL button for you and try writing for them.
