New to TAXI & curiouser and curiouser...

Post by amylatv » Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:06 am

Aloha fellow explorers-How many years I've watched and wondered what type of clientele/writers would be on here/what happened to them-I've read hours of your posts and find that it's a great place I go to first in the morning to read-May I ask a couple of questions, if they are the wrong type of questions I will gladly not ask more of them-Am a correct in assuming that writers on here have already been through their experiences (some writers) of 'situations' with ASCAP or BMI or SESAC paying them, as writers and publishers?I'd like to know if my experiences of late, yes with ASCAP, are unique in this setting-This would mean you have been getting checks from them (or BMI or SESAC) for a while and things 'happened' where you had to deal with member services. Also the 'king/queenpins' at these places, supposed to defend and protect our works and their uses worldwide.Have you got a story that ended well with them, when there was a BIG discrepancy? My second question would be regarding cowriting that generates from these boards-is it allowed that something cowritten from having met on these boards/TAXI is allowed to be submitted to the listings? My career has been primarily as a cowriter, I'm coming out of a two decade sabbatical during which I had the pleasure of raising my special son-now he told me to 'go to werhk, vile woman'...too much Family Guy i guess!Specifically, so you have a 'i've got a track, you've got a story, baby' situation...I am really a rock doctor who loves to write to hit tracks, and I do not really want to leave hawaii. The industry has changed SO much since I actively did 'this', i very much appreciate anyone's time in answering me.I figure age doesn't matter when it comes to music, hopefully distance doesn't either any more!Mahalo nui loa,a.s. latv

Amy,I can't deal with your first question--all my dealings with ASCAP are small beans--but certainly if you cowrite a song you can pitch it through TAXI. I doesn't matter where or how you acquired your cowriter. the important thing is to have a clear written agreement with your cowriter that includes who can pitch the song (you, them, both of you).I think Hawaiians are still allowed to write rock hits, but I could be wrong.

Thank you, funny travelling ed-Do you have some said hit tracks? They don't have to be rock. I live on one, but it's also considered alternative and country...not enough people here are grown up enough to know what adult or contemporary mean.I don't think ANY money you get from ASCAP is small beans, I think they are miracle magic beans.May I ask, are your songs caught in 'surveys' on the t.v./movies on t.v., or was this radio/concert related with your songs? I appreciate your time in answering my question about the cowriting very much. It's my favorite sport.

Since I'm in Canada, I can't answer any questions about the US Pros. However, in terms of co-writing - as long as one of the co-writers is a member, the music may be submitted. You should have your co-writer's permission before submitting as they will have to agree to the deal, if offered (and many of the listings give some idea of the deal's specifics).Hope that helps - and welcome aboard.Hummin'bird

I misread the "I am a rock doctor.." part I guess. But it's okay, I guess slack string guitar fits anywhere. The only stuff I have reported by ASCAP to date is from cable tv and that isn't surveyed, but came from cue sheets, apparently. I get radio play, but not enough to get above the survey noise level. So no big money, no big discrepancies--what could be easier? But there are folks here who get reasonable money from the PROs, and I hope they will chime in and answer your question. Good luck with your comeback!
