'Sexist' lyrics

well.. for the record.. I never... ever.. Ever.. thought of Midnight Train To Georgia as an other woman song or sexist in any way. But maybe that's cause I'm used to woman doing what I tell them. Yeah.. I don't think it's limited to the music industry. A quick Google search without a filter on your computer and you can find all kinds of sites. Filter out the 75 or 85 percent that are scams and, there ya go. Lots of people looking to 'step out'.Personally, I expect to give account someday. And I'm pretty sure my wife is gonna be there. (She's got to be an angel cause she puts up with me). It's my personal mission in life (and afterlife) to be able to stand in front of her with a straight face and say I never strayed.That said, I think cheating songs do a couple things. They let some people live vicariously through the song... whether it's thru the cheater or the one standing up and saying enough. Cheating songs touch on insecurity for others. Most people are insecure in one place or another. Lots of them insecure in their relationships. So it's easy to 'bond' to the song. Cheating songs imply sex and, look around, sex sells. It's a topic that draws everybody's attention. And there's nothing like a good cheating song to give you a reason to drink.Now.. drinking songs....

Hold up, you scalwags! I have got to come to the rescue of Stand By Your Man. I rate it in the top ten country songs of all time. And I am going back to before the birth of Christ on this one. I don't think the cave painters of France topped it either, though some of you seem to believe one wrote it.How does it feel next to My Humps, my ladies and gentlemen? Does that one let you relax, are you a little more comfortable with those lyrics?I realize no one is saying SBYM is a terrible song--yet. But IMO its sexist attributes are pretty gentle compared to today's crude anthems. The women in today's music apparently consider it a form of liberation to assume the mantle of their oppressors and act like sexist idiots themsleves. The attitude is very widespread. My studio partner owns a bar. He says that even at this late date, when My Humps comes on the jukebox, every woman in the bar becomes an idiot, with some ripping off their tops and jumping onto the bar. (At least that is my kind of idiot)!I am not saying MY Humps is a terrible song either...Ahem!...did I say that?One song has good chords and melody, the other has...uh...no chords? One is a gentle song depicting the loyal martyrs of wifehood of the fifties and sixties, the other a screaming anthem for wild-eyed harpies and succubi.That's my three cents worth, you rotten scalwags. It is my opinion your young daughters would be better off listening to Tammy than the Black Of Peas. Maybe you do not agree with me right now. Let's give your daughters a few more years of that diet and I will get back to you and see what you think then, after they have become teenagers, if they haven't already at eight years old.

I agree....years ago, rap was like poetry....it chronicled the struggles of the inner city, and it had a lot to say. Some of the current stuff has been seen as misogynistic, racist, etc. Not all of the current stuff is this way. Hip-hop and rap is still intelligent and thoughtful. On one hand, I don't like the use of the n-word, the h-word, etc. But I worry that if music is censored in any way, we go down the slippery slope of letting the censors choose what we can hear. I feel like it has to co-exist with what I see is music that's on a higher plane, but I don't like some of the lyrics at all. Plus, many rap artists have pointed out that this is the language of some minority communities, and that we are wrong to try to stifle it....they want to run with their creativity in this way as well.....I dunno....as I say, mixed feelings.For art's sake, I'd have to agree. I might not like it on a moral level, but I believe in artistic freedom to the max. All this is coming from a country song writer who writes about Mama, the bible and apple pie...
