For Those Struggling Whether They Should Go Or Not
I know there are probably some people who haven't been to the Rally yet so I thought this would be nice to post.I know times are tough and uncertain economy wise but if you are even thinking about going you should. The Rally is life changing or more importantly, career changing. For one thing there are mentors that will do a consultation with you if you so choose to. The private ones that you can pay for lasting over an hour and they will examine your entire career and plot a course of what you need to do and how you need to do it (don't worry it's not that expensive for the private consults). You also never know who you are going to meet and establish a relationship with that could lead to something down the line including maybe making some really good friends.Another thing that is beneficial is just being in an environment that is supportive, too often I have seen circumstances where musicians look at each other as competition and at the Rally that is definitely not the case, I have met many people including industry insiders that have been very beneficial to my climb up the ladder and have helped or given advice simply for the reason that I was friendly with them regardless of knowing or not knowing who they were or weren't.So please if you are contemplating whether you should or shouldn't go, make a point to lean to the going side, it could change your life in the long run, it may not happen instantly but like anything else, something that is worth having is worth fighting for.

Great post!! I agree, if one can afford it, the Rally is a career-changing experience. I have signed deals now because of Road Rally 2006... where I finally clued in to the fact that people I was meeting (like Dave, Mazz & Matt at that time) were getting forwards and deals... for film/tv music. Altho I had no idea how I would do it, I came home determined to try. I think I told the story on another thread.... let me look for the link... here it is...http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?b ... hread=8945(PS - the deadline for Rally registration & hotel booking has been extended - so don't wait!)

I bet we could poll far and wide, and still nobody would ever say the Rally was as waste of time as far as learning the business or creating relationship. It's an awesome experience, and quite a great love fest.

Vikki said Altho I had no idea how I would do it, I came home determined to try. This was exactly my experience at the 2006 rally - I would never opt out of the rally if there were ANY way I could get there. This will be my 3rd and from the preliminary schedule it looks like I'll be learning a lot, again!

And you'll be able to talk to mentors at the Mentor Lunch(es). As to a private, paid, consultation... go to the book room after registration and see which mentors are around this year, and chat with them about setting up a time.

Re: For Those Struggling Whether They Should Go Or
I was nervous before my first Rally and not sure what to expect. When I arrived, I realized that for one of the few times in my life, I felt amongst my "people" or my tribe, if you want to think of it that way. I immediately relaxed and had a great time.I think as artists trying to live in this world and culture, we forget that there are other people out there that struggle with the same issues and challenges of trying to live a creative life in a world that wants to force everyone in to the same little box of thinking (that's been my experience, anyway!). To be in a hotel filled with like-minded "cultural misfits" of every shape and size and background is pretty refreshing and validating, at least it was (and is) for me.It's a great shot in the arm of high energy inspiration and creative juice. It can be a profound wake up call and a reality check (or quick slap in the face, in a good way) as well, and if you can take that back in to your life and use it, you will improve and grow from it.Thanks for starting this thread, Jon. We will do some glass clinking when we meet up at the Rally, I'm sure!!Group hug!!!!!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!
