Who are the mentors?

Post by cameron » Wed Oct 08, 2008 4:20 am

Hi all,Just wondering if anyone knows who the mentors are at this year's Rally? Do you just sign up with one for your 15 minutes of fame or can you see more than one?Cameron

They usually send out an email to all registrants a week or two before the Rally, and you can download all the info as pdfs. I highly recommend you print all this info off and bring it with you on the plane, as you will need to look at all the offerings in any time slot and figure out what will be most valuable to you. And you will need to go through the list of mentors and choose 3 or 4... and number them in order of who would be your top choice, second choice, etc... so when you go to register for your mentor appointment, you tell them your #1 choice, and if all available times are gone, you tell them your #2 choice. You only have one official 10 minute one on one with the mentor of your choice. However, at every Rally, I've seen or had opportunities to talk with one or two more, depending on how it's organized. Last year they had had 2 or 3 mentors in a meeting room & you could line up and have them listen to a song.In addition, at the Mentor Lunches, you will have the opportunity to talk to at least 3 or 4 mentors with different backgrounds and experience, and ask them questions... and hear them answer the questions of other people at your table too.

I'll be mentoring and you can check out my website in advance. Also, I usually sell out my slots pretty quickly, so if you want to meet with me and you don't get a slot, I will be doing a few private consultations and you can sign up for that at my table in the booksellers room. I'm not sure of the schedule yet or how many I'll have time to do - they've got me pretty booked up this year

However, several mentors also offer one-on-one consulting sessions for a fee. I met with John Braheny for an hour a couple of years ago, he listened to 6 songs, and it was great to be in the same room & see him listen & hear what he had to say. So I always budget a little extra for buying resources from the book room and meeting with someone who's experience and perspective might be valuable to my career.

As I posted above, every Taxi member attending the Rally, who gets through registration while there are still appointments available, gets one free one-on-one session with a mentor. There is NO cost to any of the things offered at the Rally, the panels, classes and Mentor appointment are free to all members (only members get the Mentor Appointment and only members can enter music to be played at the panels.) Except you do have to pay extra to attend one or both Mentor Lunches (pretty much to cover to cost of the food).Debra is talking about extra consulting, where you might pay a fee to her, or John Braheny or Jason Blume... or other coaches/songwriting teachers, etc., to have a personal & private appt with them while at the Rally. I think you'll find, if you attend at least one Mentor Lunch & have your Mentor Appointment... and watch for opportunities for "drive by mentoring" - where they set up 2 or 3 mentors in a room & you can line up and have them listen to a song... you get opps to ask questions & get feedback - for $0

Hummingbird: If one is willing to pay a mentor a fee for "extra" consulting, where and when would you do this? And how much, if I'm not being crass, does this cost? I'd love to have John Braheny critique 6 of my songs . . . how much time did he actually spend with you?Ott

I arranged to meet with him for an hour, via email... and we touched base when we both arrived & set a time.Another way to do it is to go to the Book Room at the Rally... most of the mentors like John, Jason Blume, Debra, etc... have a table there & you can chat with them & organize a one-on-one if you haven't done it before you get there.

I've been out speaking at the ArtsNW Booking Conference in Eugene all week, or I would have also chimed in.Yes - you can get that 10 min mentor slot from TAXI for free - and they're great. And you will get a ton of info from the DIY sessions and just talking to people at lunch. I recommend doing all that.Didn't mean to confuse the issue. Just wanted to let you all know that I would be available in addition to all that.Your coach,Debra
