I think the open mic was terrible!
I thought the music was ok but there was no real originality, nothing that moved me.it was just all the same apart from a few.I also spoke to alot of people who thought the same.but hey its 15 minutes of fame for some..but the end for others.the rally was good though. alot of interesting peoplewww.alstallio.com where honesty counts

Just to be sure we're all talking about the same thing... do you mean the Open Mic downstairs or the Open Mic upstairs?

Re: I think the open mic was terrible!
[deleted some unhelpful comments]IMHO, instead of the big open mic, I sure like to see some of the "best of TAXI" or something perform. Since I know the TAXI crew has nothing else to do leading up to the Rally, maybe they could figure out a way to line up 5 or 6 of the artists that are getting deals through TAXI to do 2 or 3 tunes each. Then the context would be to say, "look how good these artists are, because they are the people getting forwarded and deals. That's how good we all need to be."Or if that's too much of a pain, how about just bringing in some "real artists", TAXI affiliated or not to do a concert? At the least, it's another great TAXI benefit, and a good opportunity for the TAXI folks from across the country to see a good concert. Ok sure, John Mayer might be too "big" to come to do it, but I bet Jon Brion would. [more deleted nonesense]

Re: I think the open mic was terrible!
I just want to inject a thought here...I live here in Nashville and play out at writers nights with some of the hottest songwriters in town as well as attend some of my friends writers nights, (in the round). The ONE MOST IMPORTANT thing you realize here is that most songwriters (even some of the best) are not the greatest players or singers. BUT they have amazing songs and THAT is what the open mics here in town are about. They arent showcases, those are far and few in between.IMO, the majority of open mic performers (because I've hosted one for TAXI in the past) aren't filled with people aspiring to be rockstars or diva singers or even landing record deals. What most of the performers are, are songwriters who want to showcase their song, not their performaning abilities. So keep that in mind when you attend the Open Mics. There are alot more songwriters with pub deals than their are singers with recording contracts and there is a perfectly logical reason for that, very few people make great performers.Jimi

This is a very, very good idea, in my opinion. I wouldn't want to see the alternate Open Mic lost, but this would be a great thing to see.

Re: I think the open mic was terrible!
HiI was at the smaller "upstairs" open mic Saturday night and I was totally impressed by the talent, especially the songwriting. I have to 1000% agree with Jimi that this is more about songwriting than performing. All I know is I had a blast at the upstairs thing on Saturday. Some people played totally heart-wrenching songs while others played hysterically funny ones. For me, I wasn't looking to see a concert with outstanding performances- I was looking to have fun. Now, I never was downstairs so I have no point of reference. And in the intimate environment of the smaller room, I made friends with some very cool people. Casey
