Some Input Needed

Hi, we could use some feedback as to what genre our songs belong in. We don't need a full critique or anything, but the majority of our songs tend to cross over into multiple genres. For example, "Near or Far" could easily be classified as either Pop or Alternative. Hmm, it's a tough one. I hear a Dave Matthews, Rascal Flatts blend with 16th note pop drums. To me it still sounds too country to be Indie Rock or plain Pop/Rock, so when I'm put on the spot with a genre I'd say Contemporary Country (similar artists Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum ect.).

great sound!Hmm...this is tough. You're a blend of styles here. I do hear a little bit of a Dave Matthews element here, but I also feel you're a smoother Kings of Leon kind of band. Kings of are listed as "Alternative" on iTunes, but I hear them on the radio as pop formats around here. So I would say "alternative" with pop crossover potential. I don't hear country, even alternative country in this, I would think that would be a stretch. Just my thoughts. You might want to go for a custom critique to help get an idea of where Taxi listings would help and where you would be wasting time trying to convince the screener for a forward. Good luck.

Hey Snoop - Yeah i think you're on the right track with the Dave Matthews kinda semi jam band type of sound. I also hear a bit of Matchbox 20? Pop-rock? Jam-pop? my band was down in Palmer Tx recording a few months back and the word I got there was that Austin gets all the pub but Denton is the true, up and coming music scene in Texas. True? I would guess most writers struggle with genre. http://www.allmusic.com is pretty much an industry standard, for the genres they have listed, anyway.Genres develop all the time, so you might not be excactly in the box of something.But by reading the descriptions they provide on genre, and trying to create a similar style of description (sort of the genre of genre descriptions), you might be able to frame something useful..

I'd say alt pop-rock, not that that's a real category. You might have better luck describing yourselves as a combination of other bands (not that you're derivative): Dave Matthews meets Kings of Lean meets Matchbox 20?Vince

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and input. We're getting custom critiques on each of the songs, so that may end up helping out a lot. eo, you're right about Denton. I absolutely love the music scene here. The way it seems to work is that bands get started here (North Texas has arguably the best Jazz program in the nation) and end up playing in Austin, since Austin venues bring in more of a crowd.
