Collaboration with Alexander Orest.....

Post by mcanty » Thu May 14, 2009 5:25 am

This song is called "The Place It Call Began"...............I'm curious if you hear any production disasters and I would also like to know how it would be classified?http://www.youlicense.com/SongDetails.aspx?ID=179920The Place It All Beganby Alexander Orest and Mark CantyVerse OneI can see you waitingOn the sidewalk by the place we metBright smile and waivingIt's a scene I know I won't forgetJust for an hourI'd give anything to breath you inFill up my soulSo I can get on with my life againI've had an easy lifeNot used to feeling pain like thisSelfish beforeBut I would come with you for one last kissI'm nothing by myselfJust broken down and giving inSo cruel to love youKnowing I won't see your face againChorusI pray to God that I will wake up with you next to meDon't leave me here without herMiss everything about herIt's not the way this story was supposed to endPlease take me back to herBack to the place it all beganVerse TwoI walk along the beachAnd wish that I could hold your handMy only companyA million tiny grains of sandI'm doomed to pass the timeA cold and lonely, bitter manYou were the rest of meThis void is more than I can standChorusI pray to God that I will wake up with you next to meDon't leave me here without herMiss everything about herIt's not the way this story was supposed to endPlease take me back to herBack to the place it all beganBridgeIt's hard to sleep when your dreams are overIt's hard to live when your hope is deadPlease take me back to herAnd just take me insteadRepeat Chorus

Nice song and production. Interesting composition. The verse sounds a bit like Cold Play unplugged, chorus sounds more like a power ballad with a McCartney/Lennon resolve at the end. Bridge didn't interest me as much as the rest of the song. Not sure what genre, maybe singer songwriter, or pop ballad. Only nit on production might be to bring the vox down a touch on the bridge.Overall this is a really great piece of work! I enjoyed the listen. Kudos and best of luck to you and OrestErich

thank you teleblaster..........no matter how many times I tell myself to bring the vocals down in the mix, they always creep back up.I really got into this song..............I've been working on it for about three days and I've noticed that I have also been depressed, LOL. It's been very emotional for some reason. Alexander is great to work with also.

Hey Mark and Alexander,I think this song has the potential to be as powerful and moving for the rest of us as it is for you. There are some things you might consider to give it another push. These are just the humble thoughts of an instrumental composer and very infrequent songwriter. The verses seem kind of wordy, like there's little opportunity to take a breath. I think some of the lines could be shortened and honed to their essence. The first verse also seems to consist of two combined verses. I'd like to hear the chorus come in after "so I can get on with my life again." As it stands now, it takes too long to get to the chorus. I would also beef up the chorus with harmony and make it the focus that it should be. By the way, the first chord of the chorus is wonderful and unexpected. There's a 2nd-person / 3rd-person confusion in the song. Mostly, you refer to "you" (2nd person). But starting on the second line of the chorus, it switches to "her". If you are referring to the same person, it's a little confusing.I was hoping for a little more storyline, like What happened? Did she leave? Did she die? The song focuses a lot on how the singer feels, but there's not much information about what happened. You hint at something in the bridge:Please take me back to herAnd just take me insteadI'm not exactly sure what this means. Exchange the singer's life for her life? If so, how would you be taken back to her if one of you, but not the other, is dead? I may be totally misreading these lines, but some clarity might be helpful here.Just my 2 cents.Richard

Beautiful, up until the transition,-minus the slightly artificial piano sound. (could be an MP3 artefact) When the drums enter, it's maybe too big of a change. I would be more inclined to submit this to Broadway listings than pop. *.02, and/or one man's opinion. And +100 to remmet's awesome feedback-I try not to color my perceptions when reviewing, to the point of not reading before responding, but holy crap! What he said!I love it! I want to hear it again...pretty sure there's a button for that around here, somewhere...

Very soothing intro, i like the piano melody and the timbre. Nice production. Vocals are mixed pretty well, feels a bit forward in the mix in comparison to the piano IMO. That could be your intention though. Nice song

hi guys,i really like the structure of this, but --i also had a hard time understanding where/when/who--i also found the vocal levels all over the place, and a few "ff's" and "spffs"--eq, don't know, not a producer.--solid song musically, well done and mac you DO have a very good voice, and Alexander as always a solid piano track.--also think the chorus should lift as much as the break--actually maybe that's the chorus? the lift is great there, in spite that mojo didn't dig it...LOL...but i did FWIW.--BTW, the broadway suggestiion is a GREAT IDEA imho, ...nice call mojo.that's it, bedtimewh

Nice one guys. I like it a lot. It has emotion. I'd call it a pop power ballad. Good lyric. Good melody. Good track.I actually liked the wordiness of the verse .. it has an interesting effect, imo. And I am one that doesn't think you necessarily need a lot of story to be a good song. I got what it was about. I can interpret it in different ways. That's cool. Plus .. for film-tv ... I think 'no story' is best .. the story is on the screen, any story in the song will just contradict the story on screen ... the song just needs to set/enhance the mood and not step on the scene .. at least that is my interpretation of what works best in film-tv. This song will do that. One couplet of the lyric didn't make sense to me:Please send her back to meAnd just take me insteadIf God sends her back and takes you instead .. you are still not together???? I don't get what you are trying to say here. I must be missing something.Love the bridge.Dean

Richard:My thinking in the chorus was.........The first line sets the scene...........he is talking to her and letting her know that he prays to be with herThe remainder of the chorus is the actual prayer, so he is telling her what he prays.I agree that the lyrics are a little vague. I could never be a country writer. I've just always preferred to "hint" rather than "tell".Dean / Richard - You've stumped me with that line. I can't really justify it, LOL. How about if I said "Please send her back to me, or take us both instead"?Thanks to everybody for listening!
