Crime Drama new Versions - Better?

Post by fusilierb » Tue May 05, 2009 1:27 pm

The last of my Jazz Fest guests left this morning so I can finally get back to work. I submitted the original versions of these to the Crime Drama listing that was due tomorrow. They are looking for:CRIME DRAMA INSTRUMENTALS in the style of the underscore for such dramas as CSI and 24, are needed by an East Coast Music Publisher who has secured dozens of Film/TV placements for TAXI writers over the years. He is looking for mysterious and suspenseful styles that "must have a contemporary rhythm section". He'll be looking for shifts in tone, instrumentation and dynamics throughout each piece.Based on the feedback of the original two I needed to up the drama. I attempted that today and now have two new versions. I think I still have a few days to upload new mixes before the listening happens and would appreciate any feedback on the writing, the mix and whether or not I'm even close now.Investigatorhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=2310 ... =trueNight Movehttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=2310 ... anfusilier

Bryan,Great sounding tracks. One of the things I noticed on a lot of the "24" stuff is "something" playing a sixteenth note figure. Sometimes its percussion, a bass figure or some sort of clicky synth figure. Sometimes there are a couple of instruments doing this and they weave in and out of the track. This seems to underpin the music and creates some additional tension. I think Night Move could benefit from something like this. You do have a hihat(?) figure around :34 that is creating the energy I'm referring to but it does propel the track to the end. Adding something else like this earlier in the track would add some subtle energy in the more legato places. I think it would draw a little attention from the tremolo strings and would enhance the effect of those parts as well.Good luck on the submission.Chuck

hey Bryan... Welcome back!I just heard Investigator and I think I've heard the older version b4.This one is definitely more dramatic... and I think this one should suit the listing better... howeverI really like the previous version and I think that one is also suitable in a less dramatic sense... Do keep the previous version too. It's really good.Wow... Night Move is Excellent! Sounds like this one also derives from the previous version... does it?-Kel

hey Bryan,I think these are definitely closer to what the listing is asking for. I think Chuck had some good advice re: the Night Move track. Speaking of the hi-hat part... Is sounds just slightly off beat between the 0:28-0:30 mark, like it's dragging just a tad. Both of them sound really good... The other comment I have, and this is probably just a personal preference, but I think I would consider using a different voice or effect at the very beginning of the track (and then again when it's repeated) on Night Move. To my ears, it just feels a bit out of place with the rest of the piece. Everything else has the nice dramatic tension to it, and that effect, to me, sounds more sci-fi and takes away some of the "seriousness" that the rest of the dramatic elements bring. Just my $0.02. Enjoyed both tracks but I think I like Night Move the best. - Big Blue

Hey Kel,It probably does derive from the first one somehow. I wrote them both the same day. B

Thanks Big B!I'll take a close listen for the drag. I'll try it without the sci-fi sound see what happens. But I really dig that sound. The bras parts in the middle, I'm not completely sold on just yet though.I always appreciate your time my man!B

Hi Bryan,Great job on these tracks. I agree with the high hat and intro comments above.I felt Investigator really went somewhere musically. I was struck how the vibe become more intense after the drums were introduced. Happened just at the right time.Best of luck with these.Al

Bryan,I picked "Night Move". First question, how could you possibly record something like this after Jazz Fest and not have some Aaron Neville high vocal or Zydeco?I liked the beginning synth sound also, but I think what BBB might be noticing is that everything else on the track is organic and sounds great that you probably don't even need that intro. It leads you to think this will be a hybrid track and its really not.Great job overall.Vince
