Slow Down - new song

Post by yammer107 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 5:40 am

Hello,Just looking for some quick opinions before I invest much moretime mixing/arranging.... general progress report on my skills I guess. Does the overall song strike you as anything even marketable? I feel its fresh, peppy & catchy.... my brother however seems to disagree .... which is confusing so perhaps I need a wake up call here. But he's strictly the 'guitar head' type, while I play both piano & guitar and love Hendrix as much as Billy Joel. My primary goals the last few months have been:1) Broadcast quality2) Improving lyrical content javascript:playSong("/stream/229742/Slow Down.mp3","Slow Down");http://www.taximusic.com/download/22974 ... Down.mp3If my link fails I may need some tech assistance - first timer here. This is certainly broadcast quality imo. I think though it sounds a little dated. It reminds me of a guy from around here named Robbin Thompson (he used to be the singer in a band with Springsteen called Steel Mill). In particular it reminds me of his song Sweet Virginia Breeze which for obvious reasons is very popular around here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0gJiNg42dgCool song though, & it could be that I'm dead wrong and my opinion is tainted by the RT song (which probably no one outside of this state has heard!).BTW; here's my public apology for not getting back to you yet on our collab . . . been getting ambushed by music opps (and life!).

Bill - Thanks for the link, these guys also sound very Van Morrison to me - but I certainly here the similarities to my song. I was afraid of adding horns - for fear of fully dating it back to this 70's smooth soul/jazz. The piano riff here was written when I was 14! Old ideas never die.... they just hang around until you find a place for them.....About the collab - just keep the comunication open and let me know when you free up. Would certainly still love the oppertunity to work with you.Chris

Chris,I don't think it is broadcast quality in its current form. The drums are too present compared to the rest of the mix (I'd dirty 'em up and bring 'em back in the mix), the vocal is uneven in volume (needs compression and/or fader riding), and the guitar doesn't sound pro.It does sound peppy (preppy?) and catchy, but also dated. You might just embrace that and record it fully as a '70's pop song.Maybe not what you wanted to hear, but hope it helps. As always, get other opinions!Vince

Hey... this is a cool song... I really like the Chords used at the Chorus...Definitely still have lots of space to add other instrumental parts... especially in the Chorus... if U wanna make it more broadcast sounding... IMO.-Kel

Vince; Thanks man... yes not a fully leveled out mix yet; I just got anxious for some feedback. Never thought of adding dirt to the drums.... that work? Over the whole kit? But your on to something.... I'm also finding working on a DAW to have almost too much "clarity" at times..... Not sure how to deal with that ..... like watching Soap Operas.... the lightings too stark, even compared to the clarity of Blue Ray. ( OK listen I dont really watch soaps! ) Kel... thanks I was afraid the chorus went too jazzy. And yes, harmonies, etc not in place yet. Room for more although I didnt have plans to go to crazy. PS: Your Queen tune rocks! Alot love put into that one...Chris

YamCool songChorus could use a lift and some harmony for a little change-up. Right now it sounds like a perfect prechorus. (beat Warren to the punch here)I know what you are thinking. I am not going back and changing all that:)Good vox.It is catchy and peppy with broadcast quality.Paul

I love this groove. It's almost a Michael Buble sounding...but maybe that's just the jazzy quality?I think the lrical content is pretty solid for the most part. I don't know what I'd recommend really. Broadcast quality is not my place to say.Andy
