Opinion's on Memphis School type Blues Submission

Post by 381 » Sat Apr 25, 2009 12:28 am

All, If you have some time could you listen to my song "Plane Crash Miracle" and give me your opinion on whether or not it fits the following listing, and your overall thoughts on the song- Its still in a "rough draft" stage but I kinda like the vibe and think I'll pull it to the top of the pile and finish it. http://www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.p ... llerMODERN RECORDINGS OF MEMPHIS SCHOOL TYPE BLUES SONGS are wanted by an Independent Publisher to pitch for film and TV placements. The bar is High and they have said that they are specifically looking for a modern style of Memphis schooled American Blues.LYRICS.....Why'd you go and run away from me,There's no more whiskey on my breath.you told me once to get the help I need, our little babies scared to death.the neighbors said that I should set you free, but I'm the only prisoner left.I offered them up my apology, and kicked their Pansies off their deck.Did you hear me knockin' on the doorWhy'd the lights get turned down lowWhose cars parked out in my front yardGuess I'll need a plane crash miracle.Didn't care much 'bout the mess I'd leavedriving through your picket fence.for 18 miles them sirens chasin' meSay 18 years is what I'll get.The Judge and Jury well they both agreeI need to take my punishment.but when it came time for my sentencing,I went and slipped out the back. Can't you hear me knockin' on the door? Why'd the lights get turned down low?Whose cars parked out in my front yard?Guess I'll need a plane crash miracleMiracle...SOLOCan't you hear me knockin' on the doorWhy'd the lights get turned down lowWhose cars parked out in my front yardGuess I'll need a plane crash miracleCan't you hear me knockin' on the doorI only want to say hello.I Hear the sirens out by my front yardI Guess I'll need a Plane Crash miracle.Guess I'll need a Plane Crash Miracle.I'll need a Plane Crash Miracle.need a Plane Crash Miracle.a Plane Crash Miracle.

This is a very good song, and reasonably well recorded, but doesn't fit the listing, IMO. This is more reminiscent of Crash Test Dummies, so not only is it not Memphis, it's not even blues. I'd recommend listening to Memphis Soul Stew for a taste of the sound they're requesting-an update on that might be more fruitful. Left/right balance seems off; you might want to revisit the panning, particularly at the beginning where there's one guitar in the mix. I like the fade into reverb at the end, but I think it's a tad overdone; slower and more subtle might work better.

Thanks for the "IMO" I was hoping that you would chime in. I kinda figured this would be up your alley from your other replies. As for the mix ...your right, heck there's not even a Bass line in there yet, but I think the composition is fairly together and will probably be a tight piece when done... One problem.. I have no idea what to classify it as...

Craig,I'll have to defer to others on whether your song fits the listing or not as I'm not steeped in the genre.I do like the song (especially the harmonic twist over the word "miracle"), but don't particularly like the snare sound (I know, it's a little thing) and it does sound out of balance. The guitar break was a little rough/harsh and took away from the professional recording to my ears.My other recommendation is to make the arrangement a little less linear--add some starts and stops, maybe ritards. You could also do that in the mix (like you did at the end of the chorus). The drums started to get a little repetitive towards the end.Good luck!Vince

Nice tune 381. I got a little tired of the main guitar hook. You might want to shorten the track if you're going to lean on that riff that heavily, but that could be just me...Regarding the listing, I'm confused about this one. I can't tell if they want modern recordings of Memphis blues songs, or recordings of modern Memphis blues songs... I think I"m going to call TAXI and findout more about it. I posted a thread in the listings section of this board on that one thta I'll update after I call.Mojo brought up Memphis Soul Stew and I had to do a YouTube search to pull some of that stuff back into short term memory. King Curtis' put some HOT bands together, Bernard Perdie, Cornell Dupree... smokin stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpAErich

Let's see...Nice sound - bright and lively.Thumping heart beat of a tune. I agree about the guitar riff - gets a touch annoying after a while! But at the start it works well because it becomes a hook. Just use it sparingly.Like the chorus and I like the sound of the voice - though maybe to upfront?I like the song alotShawn

hi 381,That guitar at the intro's pretty cool... but maybe vary it bit during the verses... the drums could use a little more variation too... However,Cool Vox cool song... Good guitar lead break too...Whether or not it fits the following listing, I'm afraid this genre is outta my area...-Kel
