CLASSICAL/METAL FOR KIDS?

Post by johnnyb333 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:10 am

I have been wanting an excuse to do a "cover" of the "Lacrimosa" forever now, and I used this listing as an opportunity. This is by far my favorite Mozart piece and wanted to incorporate the use of metal to further emphasize the emotions that he created within the orchestral elements. The only problem is in the listing it says it's for "kids." How old? My daughter is in forth grade and thinks it's awesome, so I think I am going for it. Let me know if you think it is not "age appropriate", but with all the hip hop and r&b in the world, the kids could use a bit more metal in their diets, right? Also, this is the first track I have done since I got the superior drummer 2.0 software so feel free to critic or give tips on that element as well. As always any and all feedback wanted. Thanks everybody!!Lacrimosahttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=2227 ... am=trueNEW LISTING -- PUBLIC DOMAIN CLASSICAL PIECES a la Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. are needed by an Independent Record Label for a "whacked-out" Classical Box Set project for kids that they are currently working on. This company has signed dozens of TAXI writers for use on projects distributed by Sony/BMG, Universal, EMI, etc. They would like to hear interesting and unusual renditions of classical compositions and are willing to consider almost anything that is off the beaten path. Some examples they gave are jazzed up versions of a Bach Prelude or Fugue (a la Claude Bolling) or a saxophone quartet (with or without a rhythm section) or a rock version of a movement of a Mozart piece. Please Note: They are willing to hear original or non-public domain pieces like Rachmaninoff, but really prefer known composers. If you submit originals, they must be outstanding and have the quirky edge the company is looking for. Master Quality is necessary for this one, though great home recordings should be just fine. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI and must be received no later than Thursday, April 16, 2009.TAXI # Y090416CL

Great stuff, Johnny. The time/feel is super and I like the stops and starts.Only issue might be that its pretty darn thick. Those drums (which are on my "buy" list) are big and, together with the guitar, take up a ton of space such that I don't hear the strings very well when they should be carrying the song. You might have to ride the faders or work some EQ to fix that. Or just accept that it's a wall of sound! Or have the guitar play those internal lines.Vince

As far as "kids" music goes... I think that for the most part it's not much different than "adult" music. Rachel (RLC Music) and I did a "childrens song" (that sounded "kiddie like") and got a custom critique that basically said "kids want 'real' music, not stuff that sounds like kid music". OK... so a "punk version" of our "Litter Bug" track is in the works. BTW, we're going to have to get you to pick up a good orchestral package soon though. You're another example of someone who's composing/music skills have surpassed their orchestral sounds. Time for a "sound upgrade" orchestrally speaking to even everything up. DavePS - Start planning for the Taxi Rally... dude.

I really like this -- it ROCKS!Just a couple of suggestions. There's a noise at the very beginning that sounds like it doesn't belong in the song -- something being bumped? And overall the song does come across as "thick" . . . I wonder if panning the instruments differently might help?I LOVE the parts where you breakaway to the tinkly piano more introspective part, and then return to the rocking!Bravo!Suz

Dave, I felt the same about not making it to childish based on my daughters feedback. Also, I am using that east west symphonic orchestra. I am still new to it so I might have to tweak some stuff. As always thanks for the input!!! Now I got to start figuring out how to take off for the rally....Suz, I have to go back and find that noise at the beginning. I mixed for so long my ears must have gone numb and that went under the radar. As far as thick goes, I panned the rythm guitars all the way left and right, the orc in the front, drums panned back and lead to front right. I really have bad production skills so if this seems wrong let me know!! I think I also have to go back and mess with eqs. Too much on same freqs. Thanks so much for your input!!!
