Do These Make The High Bar?

Post by ciskokidd » Tue Mar 24, 2009 6:23 am

Hello everyone,I just submitted to this dispatch listing and wanted to know what you think about my chances of getting forwarded. I kind of think both of these stand a chance, but would love your take:MALE and FEMALE SINGER/SONGWRITER SONGS – with an edge - a la Fiona Apple, Chris Cornell, Aimee Mann, Gavin Rossdale, etc. are wanted by the Creative Director in the music division of a Major Television Network. She is working on a television pilot for a well-known cable network about a female surgeon stationed in Iraq who is dealing with overcoming major obstacles both on the base and in her personal relationships. Lyrical content should reflect these type of situations but in a universal way, meaning they don’t have to reference “war,” etc., but they should talk about facing challenges and overcoming hardships. Recordings must be Broadcast Quality (great home recordings are fine) and the performances must be excellent. Remember you are pitching to a Creative Director at a major television network, so the bar doesn’t get any higher than this for film and TV. You must own all publishing rights (synch and master) to your song in full and you’ll want to have work-for-hire agreements from any musicians who played on your recording. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyric. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than 10:00am (PST) on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. TAXI #D090325SShttp://www.taxi.com/ciskokiddThe songs I submitted are "Queen With No Crown" and "If You Read My Lips"Below are the lyrics:Queen With No CrownCopyright 2009 Rodriguez/CarlssonVerse 1The stage is set for youTo come and take your bowsMy darlingThis comedy of foolsHas seen it's tragic endMy dearThe sentimental foolWho tried to play the partOf your loveCould never steal your heartFrom all the leading menIn townSetup 1So when the curtains go downThe thunderous applause has died out'I won't be thereChorusAnd you can rule over your little worldLike a queen with no crownAnd you can take turns with the other boysOn your merry-go-roundVerse 2You've written every lineStolen every sceneMy sweet loveBut days will come to passWhen vanity will takeYour soulSetup 2And when your star begins to fadeAnd no one remembers your nameI won't be thereChorusSetup 1Chorus x 2If You Read My Lipscopyright 2008 Rodriguez/CarlssonVerse 1I may appear to beJust a sullen girl who doesn't careReally I am very scaredTry, I try the best I canIt's so hard for me to beat this curseAnd find my sense of worthI want to cut the stringsWhen my own thoughts bring me downI need to stop and breatheIf I don't I just might drownChorusIf you read my lipsYou'll be surprisedRead between the linesThat I have drawnYou will find a soul waiting to flyFor so longVerse 2Why do I laugh out loud? When there's nothing funny to be heardStumbling on every wordWho? Who am I to beAll the others look beautifulHere I am so plainI want to cut the stringsWhen my own thoughts bring me downI need to stop and breatheIf I don't I just might drownChorusBridgeOne day I'm gonna shineLike the way that they doAnd shed this lonely skinI'll be like youChorus to fade

Hey Cisko,Queen With No Crown sounds great! Very well crafted song with strong production. Who did the production btw? I think it definitely fits the bill of the listing. If You Read My Lips sounds nice also. Good production. The lyric sounds like it fits the content of what that show is looking for also. Nice work! let us know how you do.

Thanks Patrick! My friend Jorgen and I produced them, although he did most of the heavy lifting. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and will let you know how it turns out.Sometimes listings like these are a little hard to get a read on, so hopefully they dig the tunes.Best,Cisko

Thanks Steve! Our tune is next on my agenda. I want to use Gaby so bad, but our schedules are not lining up, so I may end up using a different singer in the end. I have some good leads on someone who can nail it.Best,Cisko

These definitely meet the high bar for the listing. Totally pro production, you just gotta hope she likes the songs. I like 'em! I submitted for this one as well. Good luck, let us know how you do. eo.

Cool songs and great production! One nit, and it may just be me but it sounds like the low notes on "Queen" are a little below the singer's "comfort zone", otherwise a great job-

Queen With No Crown... first impression I had "Chris Cornell"... as I continue listening... I think, no.. more like "David Bowie"... and that's cool yea! Oh yes... it also makes me think of the song by Bowie "Life on Mars" hahah!& I can imagine this on a TV series... however, it's gonna be hard to predict forward or not cos I've dealt with Creative Directors & they're real tough nuts... in other words, bar's very very very high... so if U do get forwarded, be proud, very very proud for this track! I hope U get it... very good song to me... Listening to the other one now... back later...-K

If You Read My Lips...My personal favorite yea! I find this song's structure simpler compared to Queen... & I'm a fan of simplicity...However, I believe that Queen with No Crown stands a higher chance of getting the placement...Both Gr8 songs! My personal pref. is this "If You Read My Lips"Still listening now... really enjoying the guitar bridge... mmmm, nice! =)-Kel
