Harmonic overtones

Post by kskoogs » Sat Mar 21, 2009 4:35 am

Hey folks,Could you take a couple of minutes and listen to this solo Acoustic instrumental tune and tell me if I need to re-record this. I'm getting some funky harmonic overtones from the guitar at the 1:45 and 2:04 marks and I'm wondering if I'm over-sensitive to it or if you hear it as well. It's from the guitar itself so I'll have to re-do it if the general consensus is that it's too loud. Thanks for your time!SkoogThe song is "As Ever Was"http://taxi.com/keithskooglundPS-I'm trying to figure out how to link to just this song as opposed to the link to my home page. I tried "right" clicking on "play" from my homepage, and copy/paste onto forum( I'm on a mac) and that didn't seem to work. Any help? Thanks again!

I hear it, perhaps only because I was listening for it, but it doesn't bother me.That's a beautiful tune.

Hey Keith,I really like your track. Just beautiful. Yea, I hear the harmonics at the two place you mention. The second one is the most pronouced. It doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the song and like Ceedub said, I'm not sure I'd notice if I wasn't listening for it......I'm sure you'll find a place for this track...To link to your song you can use this method. There may be a better way but this is what I do;Use this templatehttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=xxxx ... am=trueYou need to replace the xxxxxx with the number corresponding to your song. To find this go to your Taxi homepage. Put your mouse over the play button of the song. In the bottom left of the page you'll see something like "..........stream/yyyyyy/........". Take the yyyyyy number and place that in the xxxxxx space ofhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=xxxx ... am=trueYou should be good to go. Probably want to check it first by actually clicking on the lnk and making sure it goes to your song.HTHDerek

Thanks ceedub and Derek. I'll live with it for a while and see if it bothers me as I get away from it more. I can always re-do in the future, but would rather not as it usually means many takes before I get one close to useable. Derek, thanks for the link template! Skoog

The harmonic doesn't bother me, but hearing the compressor "suck" in the pauses early in the tune, certainly jars my ear. You can apply dynamic eq or a de-esser to reduce that harmonic, if you like, but I would definitely revisit the compressor settings. In another matter, you have a PM. (Hah. Thought Kelsey was the only guy used that much compression on an acoustic! lol)

I hear the compression thing too. Acts like a gate of some sort. I think the eq could be tweaked slightly overall. The tone is a bit thin to my ears.Beautiful song.

Thanks for the input mojobone and Matt! I'm going to ease up on the compressor for sure, and see what I can do with the EQ to beef it up some. As I am new to home recording, I still need to find the "sweet spot" in mic placement as well.Skoog

hey Keith, i'm a long lost Hoosier, i lived in b-town for years and have seen you play a few times with Carrie, possibly Henry.Did you ever play with Shaffer? i didn't realize who you were until i read your taxi bio.i played bass with Mike & Joe for 11 years,so i'm sure we've play a few of the same ol smoky bars. Mojo, i used to hit Lafayette back in the day too, mostly frats and one bar called Where Else? anyways, songs sound great, i love Monday Song, is that you singing?peace,Marc
