Metal Instrumental - Mix help

Post by fusilierb » Sun Mar 01, 2009 11:07 am

I'm still trying to get my engineering skills in line. Big B has been a tremendous help and I've reworked this tune based on his great suggestions. So I'd like to get some more ears on this if I could. There is no mastering on this yet, just the raw mix. I have Ozone 3, which I don't know how to work, that I can use to add the polish once the real mix is where it needs to be. So suggestions on all of that would be appreciated. In it's previous state, this has been forwarded twice and rejected countless times for quality. So I'd really like to nail down the engineering side.So have at it: Metal Instrumental Guitar wankathon #1Head Pounderhttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=1847 ... anfusilier

hey again bryan, drums are still too far away sounding for me. guitar sounds seem pretty close but there's a big low end hole in the mix that I'm missing.like you I'm struggling to get my mixing chops up and it's hard work!! I want to tell you compress the drums more, but I know that's misleading because I can hear that you've got the snare compressed like crazy and it may actually be squashing your transients too much, but don't quote me. I think if you can nail the drums and fill in the low end better you'll be really close... if you could just find the magic compression and reverb settings to get a huge kit sound you'll almost be there.. good luck!

also did you track drums live or is this sampled? there's always the possibility that the raw sounds just aren't as solid as they need to be... if it's live you could use sound replacer or drumagog.

Hey Patrick,Thanks for taking the time! The drums are Superior Drummer 2, which I've owned for all of a couple of weeks now. So I'm sure I can figure out how to make the bd and snare pop better. I've heard the lack of bass many times now and that is obviously a problem. I'll move the slider up a bit. Also, the drum part itself is a bit on the lame side. My fault, I was too busy to go back and spend the time I needed to on that part. I'll get back to it soon. Thanks for listening and the feedback!BPS. I used to live in Nashville. Beautiful area of the world. What part are you in?
