My Daughter's Song
When my daughter was about five she wanted to be a drummer so I bought her a small kit. That lasted about six weeks. When she was 11 she wanted a guitar so I bought her one. That lasted about two weeks. Now at 21 she wants to be a singer. This afternoon we recorded this. . . her first ever songwriting attempt and the first time she's ever recorded her voice. There are some pretty pitchy places but she was nervous so I didn't want to pull a Simon on her but by the mere fact that 90% of the song is on key I think she could have handled it if I had been a little tougher as a producer. I'm really surprised, I'm going to try to write her some good songs.http://www.billgaunce.com/song/111

Re: My Daughter's Song
Bill, Sounds like you two had some great fun with this. I just gave a listen, not my usual genre of choice but hey I'm an old man in your daughters book. Seems like a fine start and if she's any thing like me with my first recording, she'll wear out the car stereo with it this week.I have 8 year old and 10 year old sons. one on guitar and one on bass and I have had more joy jammin' with them than anyone, ever! You should be proud. Have fun. And who is this Joey dude? Does he have a job? Ever been arrested?.......... Dave

Bill this is alright man.I think the pitchy spots are nothing that some practice wont take care of. If this was her first studio job she was probably just figuring the whole thing out ya know. Shes got attitude and the delivery was pretty good. Translating that attitude to "tape" can be hard as we all know.Yeah man write her some good stuff shes got serious potential. Cmon producer man get the best out of your artist!!! M~

Re: My Daughter's Song
Thanks you guys, I know this is a pretty stupid track but it was fun doing something like this for my daughter. I was most surprised that in spite of her being very uneasy there is still a little bit of attitude trying to sneak in (above the pitchy places lol).I think I'm going to find a specific listing and actually do a "trial by fire" track with her. I'm gonna see of I can't do something a bit "hipper" than the bubblegum Disney sounding stuff (she likes Lilly Allen which might be a good idea source). Might have to spring for some autotune software (damnit).I think it will be a challenge to be "producer-dad" because she still hasn't completely outgrown the "you're always picking on me" phase.

Re: My Daughter's Song
Great job on this, Bill. She's definitely got some songwriting chops and the vocals show promise. And, I gotta say I love the groove you laid down. I need to sit for a month with you and Barry to learn some production skills....and if you want me to tune the vocal, just PM me. I'll be glad to help you out.

Re: My Daughter's Song
I liked the two quick "reprises" at the very end. hehe Good production. Nice stereo field. I'm digging your groovy bass of late. I would bring up the drums a bit. I hear main voc double track or perhaps a little doubler and I hear what you are saying about some of the pitchy. Gotta like the attitude of the vocalist though. Nice for a debut. Lyrically..well I think you nailed it. But she should improve. So I guess now you should buy her a microphone and a pencil and pad of paper?

Damn, you're prolific. I enjoyed the song. Bubblegum and all.Kudos to your daughter. The vocal doubling she did on the prechorus sounded pretty darn good...and that's not that easy. Randy

Re: My Daughter's Song
hey "dad"damn, if she wrote this, she couldn't have given herself much more DIFFICULT tune to sing, highs are challenging for the best and so are the vocal lyric runs, BUT....my opinion is that you have not only a talented singer to be, but ANOTHER WEAPON IN YOUR arsenal==a female vocalist to help you warble your own tunes!!talented genes...i like the tune, sounds like some of those on the radio lately, the jumpy "girl" "fun" stuff that's been coming back--i'd record this again and submit it to the tween things...SOLD. and i think she CAN sing this much less pitchy!!the best, tell her this old guy likes it!!wh
