Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-Need alittle help fro
hey Wta, i agree with RLD, it sounded more classic than modern rock. The EG'S have a very unique sound for sure. I like the tone and feel, it is very hard to get a guitar tone like that. However, it is piercing and becomes hard on the ears, eq will fix that tho. I like the bass line, nice work. On the overall tune, well i listened to it early in the morning when you first posted, after a long mix session... I didnt really like it at the time and thought i may be being overly critical and tired from spending several hours mixing.. So i slept and listened again just now. I gotta say i still didnt think, as an instrumental alone it was very strong. In its current state it just didnt sit right with me.I think you dropped the guitars in to quickly, i lost interest in the lead guitar line, and overall (excluding the harshness) the guitars were too forceful, and overpowered the song. I thought the parts were too repetitive and didnt progress the way i thought it would. It left me expecting (something) but didnt pay off imo. Vocals might change this and reshape the song. Overall, i thought the song was too repetitve, the arrangement didnt make sense to me for modern rock, the guitars were loud without much excitement or appeal, and the drums sounded too programmed. Please take with a grain of salt, just my humble opinion. Since i have heard some of your other stuff, i didnt think it met the bar of some of your other stuff. Lastly, I dont see the benefit to not being honest. Peace,Jamie

Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-Need alittle help fro
Jamie, thanks for being honest what would be the point otherwise right? This is in first phase and was just getting some feedback if I should think of working it as an instrumental. I feel it needs more work, lots more if it'll make the cut but from the feedback I'm getting I feel investing the time will be worth it for sure. Maybe I should have waited to post it before further development. I"ve done some more work to the tune and have replaced the old file with the new. I haven't made any HUGE changes but enought to make a definate difference for sure. I'd like to repeat that every aspect of the tune is in phase one so I'm not "attached" to anything or part personally so feel free to fire away. Cheers!

Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-UPDATE 1
wta,You got some good comments already. I'll just pitch in that it might help this song to stand alone as an instrumental if you panned the verse guitars (currently on the right) in the center and made them the lead instrument (might have to play them more dynamically so they can "carry" the tune). Also agree with amp's comment about changing up the drums by section--you probably just haven't gotten to that yet.Vince

Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-UPDATE 2
Right! I went ahead and rerecorded some stuff and also raised the levels of the lead guitar parts. I've got a hunch with this one so bare with me... new file up and ready for reviews... Vince, you really nailed it with these added points, for sure the guitar pan and dynamic alteration WILL make this tune work, consider it done. In fact all the comments here will find their way to being done, man you guys are the best!www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/SS_3_02.mp3

hey willie-for what it's worth, i still like the "verses" a bunch, and i love the bridge a bunch too--i think your HUNCH is right with this man, the pre-chorus riff is just fine as well, but again, IMHO the chorus is very cool, but not as modern as you originally intended, but since i've now listen to this tune like 10 times... i'm thinking it stands alone as a backing track for something at a MINIMUM, big kiss,wh

Yup I think your right mate, good ears. I think this could, now at this point stand on its own as a backing track from something? not sure what but the skys the limit. The chorus is what it is as this is going to be a vocalized tune as well and the vocals will be a very modern rock style so I think that'll balance her out... bringing the lead/solo tracks forward really gave the melody a better focus, I think? LOL!

Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-UPDATE 2
Ok, I have finally gotten to the drum track on this bad boy and have co-produced in with my local brother in arms and drummer for my band Soul Solarium Billy "the preacher" Graham (yup thats his REAL name, less "the preacher" of course). Please have a listen to the new cut and let me know what you think. I have decided to revamp the lead guitar bit for the verses so "jazz it up" a bit, well not in the style of jazz but you get what I mean...www.williamthomasanderson.com/w2/SS_3_03.mp3 You guys are da best... wta

Definitely coming together. Will type comments as I listen.Am I hearing some noise on one of the guitar tracks? QT doesn't give me a time elapsed, but it was a bit less than halfway through that I noticed. Crash cymbals sound funny to me. Are they close mic'd? If so, you might have to raise the mics higher.Nice Jethro Tull guitar!V>

Re: Modern Rock Instrumental-UPDATE 2
I think it would help if as in a listing, you'd give an "ala" as to the type of modern rock sound you're trying to emulate. For instance, if your goal is a Foo Fighters type sound, then your drums and guitars have to be much more aggressive, both in the playing style and mixing choices. Can you give an example of what sound you're going for?I also find it interesting that no one has mentioned that bass note at the end of your verse sections. It does not work in this context, IMO.But I must be the only one who thinks so.
