Alive - Forward or not to Forward

Post by billman » Sat Jan 24, 2009 10:13 am

In the past, I submitted a song called "Alive" to a posting when it first came out...then, weeks later, right before the posting ended, not remembering that i previously submitted to it weeks earlier (I was submitting a lot at the time), i submitted the EXACT same song to the EXACT same posting. lol.not wanting to really bother with getting my $5 back, i waited to see what happened.turns out that one reviewer REALLY liked the song, said it was great, perfect for the listing and forwarded it - while at the same time another reviewer really did not think it was good, said it was not what the posting was asking for and rejected it. lol.I would like some feedback on this song. It's a straight-forward rock song.I can not find the exact posting description, but just some general feedback on this song would be great. The posting called for "modern rock songs" - the reviewer who did not like it said it was more "classic rock" while the reviewer who forwarded it said it was more "modern rock".Is the song "Alive" more classic rock or more modern rock in your opinion?http://www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.p ... lmanALIVEI still rememberThat Sunday morningThe dream was still in my headAnd I could taste the momentThe very moment When I knew I could understandAnd I never felt more aliveA feeling deep insideI’ve waited all my lifeTo feel aliveAnother illusionStands before meAnd doesn’t even say a wordTalking without speakingHearing without listeningI know this must sound absurdAnd I never felt more aliveA feeling deep insideI’ve waited all my lifeTo feel aliveI realize how to surviveOnly this time it’s in my mindAnd I never felt more aliveA feeling deep insideI’ve waited all my lifeTo feel aliveMusic & Lyrics by Bill Hunter © 2003

hey Billman. This song sounds more modern rock than classic rock to my ears. Although there are classic rock elements in the performance the super dry production makes it sound more modern to me. I think sometimes the only line between one genre and another can be in the production, just my opinion.

Sounds more modern rock to me. Did you do the production and songwriting? Sounds great. Very clean. The intro and verse guitar track, i wanted to hear lil more snap to. You have a great rock vocal quality. Very nice voice. No fair! I thought the section with the HP filter went too long. I also did not like the way it dropped back in... It felt like you killed the impacte that part could have had. I would've tried for a rising swell of some sort like an alternating panning backdrop that flew in and brought back the life of the song, if that makes sense. One of those things easier to show than explain with typed text. Anyway, well done. I would personally change a few things and also add some sparkle, but i wouldnt classify anything as really urgent. Cheers,Jamie

Bill,Congrats on the forward. To me the intro and verse sounded modern and the pre-chorus/chorus more classic, so I can see why you'd get varying comments from the screeners.Either way, it's well done. I probably would have used a more interesting drum beat in the verses, but that's just taste.I also didn't care for the HP filter section--sounded very brittle to me.Only other comment is that this sounds like a band and that's a good thing!Vince

Great piece. I love the bass sound. I'm not digging the am radio thingy segue into the heavy section, the am radio seems a bit cliche and the following section seems more retro than the rest of the song. You had a very convincing Foo Fighters thing until then. But, that's all nitpicking! All in all, his is a great track. Congratulations on the forward with this. Best of luck with this one.Erich

It's hard to break out of old habits.Jan 24, 2009, 3:14pm, southpaw wrote:Sounds more modern rock to me. Did you do the production and songwriting? Sounds great. Very clean. Yes, me and my bandmates did all the songwriting, recording, engineering and production. Thanks for the vocal comment! The A.M. Radio thing on the bridge was a last minute choice - originally it was just going to be vocals and a cello line, but ultimately made the radio choice. In hindsight it might've been overdone.I really appreciate the comments everyone!

Hey Bill... Congrats on the Forward!!! Like the song... I could see the classic comment... I would say the vocal performance .... and the solo... give it a classic feel... but overall the songwriting is Modern....Good stuff!!Peace, Geo
