Jazz song a la Michael Buble: "Let's Not Go There"

Post by ideascapes » Wed Jan 21, 2009 3:55 pm

One of the libraries I already have songs placed in asked me for something Michael Buble would sing. If you're so inclined, I'd appreciate any comments on my approach (melody, harmony, lyric, rhythm tracks) so far. Caveats: - Demo is incomplete, but last verse with be similar to earlier ones, except "vampy-er" and probably with a modulation up a half or whole step - I will hire a vocalist - I will add sax fills later - Lyric below is current, but slightly different than what you'll hearThanks!--------------------------------------------------http://www.taxi.com/ideascapesTitle: "Let's Not Go There"Copyright 2008 Vince Constantinoideascapes music (ASCAP)We can fly to ParisI’ll take you any timeAnd we can ride that bullet train, it’ll all be on my dime But when you start that travelogue of all my rotten deedsI beg ya please, honeyLet’s not go there, no We can visit Hong Kong, for 7 days or moreAnd I’ll escort you through those shops, you know I won’t get boredBut when you crack that scrapbook now on how I lost our doughI just say, whoa, babe Let’s not go there, no I try so hard to wipe away the missteps of my pastLike when I lost my wedding ring, or put you in that castWe’ve had so many good time trips, some lovely sights we’ve seenSo when we’re cruisin’ down memory laneCan you please steer away from me? Please? Up and away we’ll go, to take in all the sightsAnd how ‘bout that safari trip you dreamt of all those nights? But when you drop in that hall of shame of all my past mistakesI say, baby—spare me; dear—veer clear; sweetie pie—let it lieLet’s not go there! Let’s not go there!

Pretty cool. Funny lyrics. On my first listen, I had a little trouble digesting the melody with only the bass backing it up. Second listen, it fell into place. You might consider a touch of piano on the intro--just enough to give the listener a sonic path. The doghouse sounds great. And personally, I don't have a problem with the voice. I know it is not finished, but nice job all the same. I think this could work. Good luck.Randy

Vince, First off. I'm a big Michael Buble fan. Such a great voice, person. yada yada I think the style is on the money. And the subject matter seems to be a fit. When I think of Michael Buble I also think along the lines of Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra, all the oldies/goodies. And the subject of traveling off to different parts of the world fits that post-war liberation mood going on that Michael clings to. I just can't help but wonder what this guy has done that he doesn't want to discuss his past...I almost forget the humor intended. I'm not sure if it's just me or not. Because the truth is, I did get the humor/hook of them going everywhere around the world, but they aren't going into his past. I enjoyed this. I hope something comes out of this!!Andy

Vince,I like this a lot! I think it fits Buble well. The ad-libs are cool. The lyric is very good. I think you point out thoroughly enough what he has done in his past, so that the listener easily gets why he doesn't want to 'go there'. Excellent job.Dean

Thanks for the time and comments, Randy, Andy, Dean. That's a good idea to put a little piano in the intro, although my guess is a better singer will be able to pull that off with just the bass--we'll see. And I have gotten a comment previously about adding more detail the the past mistakes, so I'll reconsider that.Vince

Vince, I'm not a MB fan, but i'm forced to listen to him a lot because my wife is! I think you've nailed this. The bass is great, don't know what you're using but it's really cool. From a production stand point the one thing I've noticed about his recordings is the warmness. If the facility doing the vocals for you have a ribbon mic I would suggest you have them try it. It would be a pretty easy thing to warm up the master, but imo the vocals will need that ribbon sound to be on the money. I don't know that MB uses a ribbon, but that's the sound I took away from listening to his stuff-

Vince,I don't know MB, but the song is very impressive! Great idea for a tune and you've pulled it off very well. Sort of a modernized Cole Porter.Cam

Thanks for the listen and comments!bill, good idea about the ribbon mic and I'm tempted to buy one, but I only record vocals in my place as demos for whomever I eventually hire to sing, so not sure I can justify the expense.Geo, sounds like I need to start staying awake later to catch music on late-night commercials.Cam, Cole Porter is probably what I had in mind when I wrote this and of course that's a very flattering comparison.Vince
