where do i fit??

Post by silvercord » Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:52 am

Hi! my name is "feast of me"I'm a song that is having a bit of an identity crisis.you see, i came into this world imperfect, as many of my peers.i have recently 'buffed up' per advice by a kind Taxi screener..my snare was considered too loud and my chorus seemeda bit lifeless...so if i may ask those of you that have ears about what you thinkof my new form n' figure (you don't have to be gentle..) and alsoamong music genres, where do you think i fit? i actually thought i was more trip hop/electronica..but now I'm having doubts..thank you very much for taking the time to read this song'sthoughts!this is where i currently call home:www.taxi.com/silvercordwould love to read from you~peacefeast of me

I think it´s a good melody but the drums are a little bit stiff to me ( needs more variation). I think it could be nice to make it as a triphop chillout song as you mention. Maybe a hiphop beat together with some percussion elements, but this is just what I think.Kind regards

Geoff,I like it. I'm thinking more singer/songwriter with electronica touches, even some R&B. I like the sound of your voice; modern songs seem to use backing vocals pretty liberally; I'm wondering if you're considering more of that in the final mix. I heard more of that later on, but it was pretty subtle. Well done, though. What about doubling the melody an octave up in the chorus? Occasionally I thought I heard that, but if so, it was mixed very low.Vince

Hey Geoff! As far as genre, I would put it as a dark chillout/electonic track. I like it! It's a good piece with a lot of movement, a bit heavy, but then again so is the subject. Here are some thoughts on how to get more out of this piece.Voice -- the singing is really good, don't get me wrong... but I think it stays too low too long. I liked what you were doing with doubling the vocals with octaves. More of that could be good. Your voice is more expressive in the upper range & falsetto IMO... use it to your advantage. Here's a different thought.... In a song like this, I think affecting the voice more can be not such a bad thing to do. Perhaps doing a hard auto-tune or maybe a reversed reverb/delay could make it pop more. Then again... maybe that's just me! Also, affecting the backing vocals could be a cool way to do things too.... though probably not at the same time!Drum track -- needs some changing up.... the beat works well for the beginning, but later on perhaps adding a quick, light broken beat (maybe double time) in the background might perk it up a bit and give it some more interest without being too obtrusive. I don't think it would take too much away from the dark subject matter, especially if you amped up the vocals with it. Then it would be more of a "screaming into the darkness" type of thing. It's one way to go anyway.Instrumentation -- I have no complaints here at all... but when I try to listen as a producer, a part of me wants to hear what a more stripped down approach would sound like, and how transitioning from the original to stripped down would play in the different parts. For example, stripping away some of the panning effects on some instruments to pan hard to the side, changing to a "phone" EQ or bitcrushing some elements, and taking out some other instruments and replacing it with atmospheric elements. This kind of a change could have dramatic results in the emotional pull. I just listened to Bob Schneider's "Honeybomb"... and you might be able to get an idea of what I'm talking about even from the :30 clip on iTunes. So.... those are some things to consider, perhaps... and just my opinion, so take them sparingly with grains of salt as needed!

GeoffHard to follow Zoom. He da man:)Just wanted to give my support.Drums are almost offensive until about one minute and then they start to blend in. I pretended they weren't there at the start.Loved the harmonies and the higher notes the best. Singing to me in general was good.Lot going on for background. Some cool stuff.Anxious to hear where you are steered for genre? No clue here.good luck Paul

Very cool song!Great vocals - Reminds me very much of Howard Jones, which is someone whose vocals I always liked alot. But if anything your vocals seem even more expressive, which is a great thing. Can't really comment much on genre, but to me it certainly has an electronica (and space/ethereal) feel. There could be more complexity and variation, but I think it would lose alot of the weightlessness that gives this song it's vibe... so that is a tough trade-off for sure.I really enjoyed the tune, seriously nice work!Regards,Q.
