AXLE -- FINAL MIX? Comments welcome!

Post by zoom » Fri Jan 16, 2009 7:15 am

Hey all!I was working on this piece before this listing came out, but was wondering if you think it fits. This tune still is a rough as I work on dynamics and mixing, but all the parts are there (I think). So, other than the standard, "Do you think it fits?" question, I'll also ask you to comment on whether or not it needs more melodic, rhythmic, or instrumental development. Does it go far enough? The song is AXLE (Rough)Here is the link... downloadable from there if you want!NEW MIX AVAILABLE CALLED "AXLE (FINAL)"To hear online: http://www.taxi.com/patellweinUPTEMPO DANCE/ELECTRONICA SONGS and INSTRUMENTALS in the range of The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Prodigy, The Crystal Method, etc. are needed by the Project Director at a well-established Los Angeles-based Music Production Company for film and TV licensing. Amazing vocal delivery (both male or female vocals are fine), infectious grooves, great songwriting/instrumentation, and outstanding production are all essential. Lyrically, more universal themes are better and please be sure to stay away from elements that will prevent your song from being forwarded (e.g. uncleared samples). Your writing and production must be stellar... bottom line is that they want new material that’s going to grab them by the neck and demand their attention. Thanks for your feedback!Pat

(and never a problem to post a comment when I have the time )Yeah, they may skew toward vocals, though with some of the groups mentioned it seems as though the lyrics are an after thought at times. If something comes to me before the deadline I might give it a shot... though I'm not gonna sweat it too much.Good call on the breaks, and as I get the mix going a little more I'm sure I'll be changing it up here and there to un-predictify it a bit.

Hey gang! Thanks for listening and getting back to me. Vince... I agree... if I think of some cool shout outs or maybe a catchy chorus that I can break up and spread out, I'll try it.Geo... glad to hear it sounds good on your cheap speakers too! And I hear you on the tempo... bumping it up 5bpm seems to have helped a bit, but going up 10 makes the melodic component a little too quick for me... but, it's still a work in progress...Brad... thanks for commenting because I know you know this genre way better than me! Yeah, this is definitely lighter than the a las, and I may keep it on the lighter side (of course a dirrrrty mix might be in order too!), only because this is for a film/tv listing, and I want to keep it a little more versatile. And yes, the plan has been to put in a REAL guitar for some good crunch. Good call on the drums, as I've been looking for some better kit sounds.I think I've decided already to fix it up for this listing... no matter the outcome, we're gonna see how far $5 will fly. Any other comments or suggestions?

Thanks Paul, Jay and Kitz!I'm tweaking the last bits, I think.... Have added live guitars, some dirrrrty synths... now up to 43 tracks! And it started as such a simple piece... I might be able to post the latest version this afternoon for more feedback!

I agree the listing seems to lean more towards vocals, and would love to hear what you come up with if you decide to go that way. All in all sounds very usable to me, if not for this lsiting then certainly many others. I am also interested to learn more about this type of recording...Would you care to share what your gear, hardware, software, format, samplers, midi, etc...set up is like to achieve these sounds? Best of Luck!LeeThanks for the feedback Lee!Yeah, I'm guessing they want some sort of refrain too... and I'm not sure if I've nailed it for this listing, but I started this track before I saw it, so screw it! As far as gear, I'm working in Logic Pro on a Mac most of the time, using my ratty old synth from the early 90's for MIDI only. Most of the synths and drums come directly out of the box, but I do have other packages too, mainly from EastWest and EZDrummer. Of course with a piece like this I usually end up effecting a lot of the sounds anyway, making them fairly unrecognizable. For live guitar, I usually just plug in direct and use the on-board effects to shape the sound. Really, Logic has some great guitar sounds that are pretty easily modifiable. For this particular piece, I have 43 tracks (only 5 were audio, the rest MIDI) most of which funnel into 10 different busses before dropping into the master out... all with varying effects which gave my laptop the hiccups on live playback! Usually I don't try to stall out my computer, but I got on a roll... or something. Hope that helps!
