Rock Cue - Modern Enough?

Post by ideascapes » Thu Jan 08, 2009 8:14 pm

One of the libraries I already have a contract with asked for a "modernish rock" cue (~45 seconds) about "material possessions." Would love to get opinions on whether this sounds modern enough. I know it'd be nice to get a better description, but that's all I got! Thanks much.Vince-----------------------------------------http://www.taxi.com/ideascapes

Vince, to me this could be heard as having an 80s vibe. I hear so much stuff these days that sounds like it's obviously drawing from something earlier that I don't really know what a "modernish" sound would be without specific examples. Yeah, that helps doesn't it!

Vince, I'm not hearing modernish rock either. My understanding of modern rock is more the sound of groups like Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, even the non-pop songs of Nickleback. It think it's slightly grungier than your current sound. I think I hear an organ in there...that's not helping.Andy

hey vince--i absolutely disagree--you have the theme down perfect, the timing, and frankly in 45 seconds or so, i can't imagine them saying this aint "modern-ish"--unless they just want a bunch of damned noise....oh, happy day for me--this is my first listen on MY NEW COMPUTER!!! hell, hope it's lucky for you....all the best, warren

Mmmmm. Reminds me alittle of the Friends theme, in that ball park. Modern rock's best exsample might be the Killers and the like. I'd like to hear something closer to them for a modern rock call... Whats the deadline? Pm me if I can help in anyway...

Thanks all--bill, Andy, warren, William. All the opinions help, even if they are somewhat contradictory. My conclusion is I will go back to the super and ask for more "a la's" or at least a better description of what he means by modern. Of course, I'll submit the song too--maybe it's perfect as is!V>

Yeah, I'd say go for it Vince, as "modernish rock" is so subjective that no two screeners probably agree on it anyway.Cam

Hey, Vince. Going back to the super is the right idea; get them clarify.I think most of the "80's vibe" that folks are hearing is in the production. Some things that you may want to play with:* eliminate the organ* make the mix much drier* make two guitar tracks, split them left and right* awww, heck, just listen to Big Blue Barry's productions From a composition standpoint, it's got the drive, etc. I think the main gaps are going to just be from a production standpiont.Good luck, man!Jonathan

The more staccato part starting around 0:20 might be a good way to start the tune? I'm not forwarded for this stuff though...I usually reference stuff from Big Blue or Bb. The song is good Vince, I agree that the sonic treatment is suggesting an older style. How long have you got to deliver?
