IS THIS SUSPENSE/ OR THE RECYCLE BIN

Post by jay10music » Wed Jan 07, 2009 3:06 pm

GUY'S.....After many hours and days, working on my daughters CD..... ..I decided 2 take a brake and try something in the listings .Of course I picked something I never Get right and that's "SUSPENSE" After (5) hours on this tune, I wanted to pull my hair out...So I bounced it out and Burned It.. And here it is...Now The Question Is....Forward or Recycle Bin... I'll tell u,... this track is wierd... Thanks 4 the the Listen.....Jay.... NEW LISTING -- HIGH TENSION/SUSPENSE INSTRUMENTALS for various Film/TV placements are wanted by a very successful Production Music Library who has placements with ABC, CBS, NBC, WB, Disney, Discovery, Lifetime, Fox, USA and more. These instrumentals can be in a variety of styles, but they must sound current and contemporary. If you take an orchestral approach here, it's suggested that it be blended with current-sounding instruments with "edge" - Electronica or Rock elements could be a good choice. These tracks need to be compelling dynamically, without a lot of motive/melodic repetition. Variation and momentum/build will be key for this one! Be absolutely sure that the instrumentation sounds fantastic - this company really doesn't like "bad MIDI". Broadcast quality is necessary, though excellent home recordings should be fine. Please submit 1-3 Instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than January 14, 2009. Hey Jay man!I don't think that this song AS IT STANDS NOW is right for this listing... there.... it's been said. The key reason being this: "Be absolutely sure that the instrumentation sounds fantastic - this company really doesn't like "bad MIDI"." This is a synth piece... and it sounds like a synth piece that's trying too much to be orchestral without the proper samples to "own" the sound, which IMHO makes it sound like bad MIDI, not to mention a little dated. Own it, make it 100% synth and you may have something here. There are quite a few good twists in this track!Also... just a couple of mixing notes -- the cymbals and the wood block are way too hot in the mix for me... and I think if you toned down some of the panning effects it will increase the effectiveness of the panning effects you want to accentuate. With all the different delays and bouncing around going on in the track, sometimes it gets a little too muddy. You may also want to experiment with the percussion -- sometimes the absence of a hard beat can be more suspenseful than having one. So perhaps one section has that hard beat and then the next doesn't, only to pick it up again to pick up the pace a bit. It's that kind of variation that will build emotion without affecting the melody. Something to think about anyway. The melody and the essence of this piece point to suspense. With some instrumentation and effects changes, it definitely has potential IMO. Good luck with it, and have fun!

Jay,Really interesting instrumentation here. I mostly agree with zoom's comments--mixing, varying percussion (but I do hear you lose the heavy kick in at least one section).I don't actually think the sounds are that bad--I'm hearing some "arco" sounds on the intro string instruments--but I do get zoom's point.Starting at about 1:35, the snare sounded wimpy to me.It seems you have a great start and it's definitely carrying the tension/suspense feel. Since the deadline isn't 'til 1/14, maybe you could beef up the string samples and you'd have a good shot at a forward?Vince

Jay... I think you understand suspense well, and you have a lot of key elements for a good high suspense track. I think with some experimenting you could be "in the pocket" of this listing... but IMO suspense needs constant shifting... an uneasiness... and lots of little surprises can get you there. All I was trying to say was that having a steady hard beat isn't surprising... but LOSING a hard beat is like taking the floor out from under you.... then adding it back in unexpectedly can be even more surprising. So, to answer the initial question you asked... I think this song is worth working on.

BEEP BEEPHere is what I visualize. Abby on NCIS in the lab. We are watching her with a tweezers getting a tissue sample for a DNA test. No kidding man. As she would say "Gibbs we have a match" Like it man, but as Warren said, listen to zoom for the fine points.Your friendPaul

I pictured George Clooney walking down an alley in a rusted out industrial warehouse district with his gun drawn looking for the bad guy. Suspenseful, but with anticipation of some pending action thrown in. Cam

I can't really comment on production. I can say as soon as I heard your peice I pictured an adventure show like Man vs. Wild, or even a hunting program. I've heard similiar sounds in one of those places.Andy
