Anybody ever write a country song.........

Post by mcanty » Fri Jan 09, 2009 4:34 am

to lampoon country songs? You know what I'm talking about.......lost my dog, my truck etc? Here is a song I wrote a year or so ago.........it is lyrically weak, somewhat intentionally. But the chorus I like, partly because there is some truth to it, LOL. Reminds me of a cheesy sitcom theme. It's called "I Hope I Get Fired (Cause I Ain't a Quitter)"I live in Tennessee so I am allowed to do this http://www.taximusic.com/stream/117511/ ... itter_.mp3

I think you could be on to something. The verses are weak (like you said) but the chorus could be cool but needs to be shorter and easier to sing-a-long with imo. The theme and line "Hope I get Fired 'Cause I Ain't Quitter" are great but the melody & chorus need to be more "crowd sing friendly" ala "Take This Job And Shove it".Then of course you'd have to spring for the mandatory Nashville demo.

I suck more at country. Every now and then I give one a shot and then throw it up here to let the real country writers laugh at me! I think I'm at the point where I can understand what's needed but not to the point where I can actually reproduce it.

David Allan Coe's " You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (written by Steve Goodman and John Prine) comes to mind as a spoof of country. Here are some of the lyrics:So, I'll hang around as long as you will let me.And I never minded standing in the rain. But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.You never even called me by my name.(spoken:)Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song, and he told me it was the perfect country and western song.I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not theperfect country and western song because he hadn't saidanything at all about momma, or trains, or trucks,or prison or gettin' drunk. Well, he sat down andwrote another verse to this song and he sent it to me andafter reading it I realized that my friend had written theperfect country and western song. And I felt obliged to includeit on this album. The last verse goes like this here:Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison,And I went to pick her up in the rain,But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck, she got run over by a train,And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.And I never minded standing in the rain. But you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'.You never even called me by my name.

This could be turned in to something mighty fine imho. You've got a very good lyrical hook here. Take a listen to James Otto and I think you'll see how this could be made into a good country song. It's got a bit of a 70's pop feel now, but Jimi's studio works magic on giving songs a current country sound. Cam

Cool song...one thing that struck me immediately was that it seemed to really need a strong(er) bridge into the chorus...right now it slides in a little easily and it might give the chorus alot more zest if there was a short buildup in a bridge....but of course, that's just one persons opinion.Regardless, I definately think this song has great potential, the voice style fits and it seems pretty solid overall (given a few possible production issues).Great work.

Still looking for collaboration.....Here is what I need in a co-writer (you will actually be the third writer).....1) Good lyrics2) Knowledge of the genre3) Ability to cut demo or willingness to split cost of professional demo Here are the lyrics as they currently exist:Verse 1Can you tell me what it takesTo get escorted from this placeI'll clean out my deskWith a smile across my face....oh yeaI can't work another dayI need a permanent getawayI'm on a conference callBut my mind is miles away.....at the beachI don't want the company carJust wanna move my office down to the barChorusI hope I get firedCause I ain't a quitterBut I'm getting oldAnd I'm getting bitterThe daily grindHas fried my mindAnd I gotta leaveThis place behindI need to get cannedCause I'm going crazyI'm not a loser andI'm not lazyBut man this place can be so dullSo I'm gonna burn my cubicleI'm getting oldI'm getting bitterAnd I hope I get fired cause I ain't a quitterVerse 2I always come in lateAnd make my way home earlyI hate my boss and I'm sure that he is surely......tired of meTell payroll to mail my checkI'll be sipping a cold one out on the deckRepeat chorusBreak
