Stylistic question on "Rainy Tuesday"

I wrote this song a long time ago called "Rainy Tuesday". I had it recorded at my first studio and we did it as a 60's style rockin' number. I love the 60's rock thing but the lyrics (which need a lot of work!) are more angst-ridden and the music seems to not go with the words, especially the chorus.I laid down this rough experiment today , doing the song as a slow singer/songwriter song. The 60's version sounds better to me. I think with a little redo this could work for an poppy 60's ala Monkees kind of thing. I think a lot of times in those 60's songs the music was lighter than the lyrics, I don't think that's a big deal.

I'll swing the pendulum the other way here from Bill.... LOLI like the singer/songwriter version as I think it would really lend itself to film/tv listings. Especially the way that you are playing the guitar here, independent film productions could be knocking at your door. And the nice part with getting the indie s/s feel is that you really won't need to add a hell of a lot more instrumentally to make it shine. I'd just watch the vocals with phrasing/prosody issues as i think the melody needs to run pretty clean and sing-songy to contrast the darker lyrics. And I would probably switch out the solo with a vibraphone or something like that... gotta go for the unexpected here!HTH

It is hard to compare the two since one is finished and the other a rough. I am bothered by the rushed lyrics in the verse in the new version, but if the lyrics are changing, that could change again. I think the "see you again" part is better as a rock version. I could see it done acoustically, but I think the pacing would need to change a fair amount. I could imagine a quite different version of this than either of these. The rock version isn't bad at all.

I would lean towards the singer/songwriter version for licensing. (Although I do like the original version...cool vibe)I do agree with zoom that you have to clean up the lines as far as phrasing, but if you were going for licensing, the singer/songwriter version may work out better.

Hi Casey.... I really dig the original version!!! I can see the guys point about the singer songwriter version.... and the hook does work in that version good as well.... but...The vocal delivery and the music (esp. drums) were giving me a Brit Pop vibe..... kinda Elvis Costello with a touch of Madness or English Beat here or there or even Squeeze..... the hook / chorus is pretty infectuous!!!My suggestion would be develop both versions ....Lyrically the only issue I have is the second verse.... it has that Beach Rock theme which is outa sorts with the rest which fits more into the Brit Pop vibe....This is all IMHO of course ... my 'alas' not current.....(maybe "Panic at the Disco" might be a usefull 'ala' ) .... just what I was hearing/feeling...Good song Casey!Peace, Geo

Thanks everyone who commented so far... appreciated!I really wish I wrote better lyrics the first time around because the original might work as a 60's style film/TV track... at least, possibly so... Back when I wrote this I still thought being vague was cool being so 60's influenced. I also hadn't a freakin' clue what I was doing. Your comments on the phrasing are very helpful. I'm stuck in my own paradigm and don't hear those things. Casey

Casey,My vote is for the singer/songwriter version. The faster one is very Monkees-like, but the song could work fine both ways depending on the occasion. If you're contemplating a singer/songwriter demo I would go for it.Cameron
