60s Garage Band

Post by billg » Sat Dec 20, 2008 5:33 am

here's the listingGARAGE ROCK SONGS that sound like they're straight out of the 1960s are wanted by a Nashville producer who is working on a project for a male singer. He's looking for songs with great hooks and he would prefer to hear mid to up-tempo only. A psychedelic tone is just fine for this one, but stay away from shoegazer' tunes. He's definitely not interested in anything that sounds like it could be heard on today's modern rock radio. The main focus will be staying true to the 'garage rock' sound and style, along with unique lyrics and great hooks. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. Submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received by January 14, 2009.TAXI #S090114GRI actually wrote this song when I was in a 60s garage band !!!!!(excuse me while I take a hit from my Geritol)I really liked The Chocolate Watch Band but they never had a hit so I tried to merge them with Paul Revere And The Raiders because back then I was stupid enough to want to be a rock star I'm going to work on some more "clever" lyrics but used my authentic ones as a "temp" so I could get the music down. (I think I want to keep the title and "hook/chorus" though)Song's called "So Doggone Pretty" , all comments welcome . . . http://www.billgaunce.com/song/103

You wrote better songs than I did back then, that's for sure. The songs in my first band consisted of a 45 minute jam on an E7 chord. No wait, that was the second band, come to think of it. The first band knew one song, Proud Mary, and I doubt you'd be able to recognize the song because it was played so badly, and you couldn't hear the vocals for the out of tune instruments.Ok, the sixties vibe is there for sure... I don't think it's one of your best songs, but I guess you knew that. You write some damn nice stuff, and if you have the time I'd be inclined to give the garage treatment to one of your other tunes and submit it as well. How about your Byrds sound-alike tune that got returned a few weeks back? That oughta work for this listing.Cam

I don't think the song your talking about would work Cam, too clean & laidback. I went to check the wiki definition to see if I was thinking about the term "garage band" in the correct light (i was thinking some of that stuff is probably regional) but their definition and mine are the same (although I've never heard of the Rationals)From Wiki;"Thousands of garage bands were extant in the USA and Canada during the era. Several dozen of these produced national hit records, including "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen (1963-64), "Psychotic Reaction" by The Count Five (1966), "Pushin' Too Hard" by The Seeds (1966), "Gloria" by the Shadows of Knight (1966), "96 Tears" by Question Mark and the Mysterians (1966), "Talk Talk" by The Music Machine (1966), "Dirty Water" by The Standells (1966), "Double Shot (of My Baby's Love)" by The Swingin' Medallions (1966), "Respect" by The Rationals (1966), and "Little Bit O'Soul" by The Music Explosion (1967)."I'm glad to see The Seeds mentioned . . . it's the first band that pops in my mind when I think of Garage Rock. I suppose unique lyrics and great hooks are pretty subjective . . . Pushin' Too HardTHE SEEDSYou're pushin' too hardYou're pushin' on meYou're pushin too hardWhat you want me to beYou're pushin' too hardYou're pushin too hardOn meI guess it gets the point across!

Hey Bill,Very strong Yardbirds/Animals vibe on this to my ears. I'm not sure if that represents a 'garage band' sound or not, but it definitely captures the era. No shoe gazing that I could detect either. My only nit is that the production sounds a little too modern to me for that era. It might not matter on this since you're pitching the song and not the track if I read the listing correctly.Cool tune, wish I had stuff like that in my back pages to pull out for this listing....

I was forgetting the "garage band" requirement, not just 60s. Your other tune is probably too professional sounding.Cam

Hey Bill,I LOVE it! The only thing that I would suggest would be to tweak the sound to it's a bit more raw, but other than that it sounds great. I can hear a bit of Watchband and also some Count 5 in there as well.If you ever want to collaberate, let me know (I do everything but sing). There is nothing I love more than garage/psyc!!! Dave

Bill,GREAT TUNE!! ROCKS!! It SOUNDS a little too good to be garage band but the style seems to be right on for me. GREAT HOOK. Maybe run it through an AM radio sound or something.Keep this version though - it ROCKS. What I recall of those days is that the drummer was always way louder than the rest and everything was kind of sonically squished together. Just one big mass of sound with no real definition. Wow - that would probably be hard to reproduce - Good Luck on it!Try this - take your speakers out to the garage. Crank the drums up 20db and use one mic in the middle of the room to record it to cassette...Good luck!KitzKeep 'em coming

Bill,Kudos to you for even being able to remember that you wrote this song. lol Good song. Good hook. Your lyric writing skills have developed a lot over the years. It seems a good fit for the listing to me.Dean

BillI actually wrote this song when I was in a 60s garage band !!!!!Took some time to absorb that:)Sounds like the sixties, maybe a little dirty waterish, but the lyrics aren't quite the right match for that sound? You had said you were going to mess with that later. The harp fill might have been used a little too often also.Keep in mind, I am a big fan of yours and am not much on critiquing.I think this is worth some attention.peacePaul
