I'd call it blues first, funk second. It's definitely funky, but it's not the TOP or James Brown style funk. It's a blues guy singing and playing in a funky style. That you singing RLD? Cool track! So I'd say Blues funk.

Blues!!!!! Cool feel, I like it ! I think it might sound better with a shorter reverb (or smaller room) on the horns.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.I played and sang all parts. The reason I'm asking is I've submitted it to a few "A WIDE VARIETY OF BLUES SONGS in the range of..." type listings, but keep getting "not a blues song" remarks. Now I know its not a 1/4/5/ blues, but many of the "a la" artist have lots of songs that aren't 12 bar blues either. So, I was wondering how it appeared to others...guess I'm still confused.

If a listing asked for blues, I just don't think this would be considered mainstream blues because it's not a shuffle or 6/8 feel. The 12 bar pattern might not matter as much, but if a listing say blues, I would really listen to the a las to make sure that your song mirrors the same groove as the listing, as much as possible.IMO, your song is blues. I've played in a lot of blues bands where this is exactly what we played. But what the screeners think is blues, might not be the same as what we think at all. That part sucks. Were there any other reasons mentioned why this might got passed over? Sometimes screeners don't mention EVERY thing that might have help the song back.

RLD,Without looking at what others shared, I checked out your tune, and thought to myself "Funk with a little blues... very James Brown." Then I read the comments and noticed zoom said exactly what I was thinking--right down to James Brown. It sort of reminded me of when James Brown sang "Living In America."Check out the "Living In America" intro on YouTube.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHqUipinDywYou can't get much closer.GB

Based on what I've heard from past submissions for Funk listings, I would catagorize this as a Funk tune. It's not funky funky funk, but it feels more funk to me than blues. Listening to your rhythm guitar work, the bass line, etc...just feels closer to funk than blues ta' me. JMO. We all walk that fine line when it comes down to one's interpretation vs another's. I-468

Re: Your opinion: what genre is this?
I woulda said old school R&B, but that kinda includes blues, doesn't it? The bigger problem is maybe production-related; could be they're not hearing this as blues because of the treatment: some of the instruments have way more reverb applied than is common in the genre. I'd like to hear the lead vocal more upfront and the guitar fills/solo and sax solo are getting lost; maybe a smaller room instead of the huge hall. The performances are top-notch, kudos.
