Orchestral thing, what now?
This is something I just finished tonight and wanted to get some feedback on. Its an orchestration of a piano sketch that I was using to get better at writing with the East/West orchestra library. I have officially decided I really LOVE these samples.Any comments and suggestions about the piece are very welcome. And then, now what do I do with it? I have learned that I'm not that great at reading these listings yet. Any ideas what something like this might be appropriate for? Dave, wanna try 2 for 2?http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... ream=trueB

Fusi, Is your name Dave, or were you talking to Dave at the end of your post? Where are you located???You have a really good dramatic piece here. I'd say that the first half of it sounds more authentic than the second half. I felt that there was a bit too much going on, perhaps, in the second half. Maybe because of your post, I got the impression that you were playing with every piece of lego in the box to try it all out!!!!I also use E/W and I do find that the strings are the most difficult instruments to get sounding authentic. You have a solo violin come in at :50 that sounds too stark to my ear, also, I felt the clarinet in the opening was too loud, maybe should sneak in a bit more and then crescendo. The gurus of E/W on this forum will no doubt be able to give you solid advice on getting it all to sound more authentic. They are very generous with their knowledge. Have you checked out the EWQL forum? Those things I mention are just little things that popped out at me in first listening. You are clearly gifted as a composer! Really nice picture drawing with music. There are some good listings for this kind of music coming up - go for it!! All the best.Georgie

Fusi - if you want some ideas about those listings this might suit, there is one, deadline tonight, for Orchestral instrumentals in any style - has to be over 2 mins, which yours is. Now that we have the mini-critique in place, it makes it more worthwhile giving it a shot because at least you'll know why if it doesn't get forwarded. Also, look at listing S090105IN (jan 5 deadline) - it could be a possible fit for that but it comes with a full critique which could be worth having. Just ideas...Georgie

Thanks Georgie, I'll definitely submit to today's listing. And will listen again to the piece with your suggestions in mind. One of the great "tricks" I've learned about submitting to these listings is that as long as you submit the piece on time it locks it in whether it is complete or not. Then it seems like you have at least 4 weeks to continue to modify and upload new versions before Taxi gets around to listening to it. Takes some of the pressure off of their deadlines.PS. My name is Bryan. I was giving a shoutout to Dave. I should do a better job of identifying myself on these posts.

Oh, I forgot. I live in New Orleans, which was just snowed upon this morning. That never happens here!

Really, have you received any word from Taxi any earlier than a few weeks? I am working under the assumption that they have some sort of automated system, so when a listener listens to these from some sort of web Que., then they write the critique up, hit a submit button and it fires off all the emails. So you think the listen could happen way before the responses go out?

Hi Bryan - Snow in New Orleans - ha! So much for global warming! It's below freezing over here in England, too. I'm with Hummingbird - if you upload a new MP3 to a submission much past the deadline, they may have already listened. I have made submissions and updated them afterwards, but not much more than 24 hours after, unless it's a minor change to the track. Georgie

So you think the listen could happen way before the responses go out?yes, the listens could happen any time, and the results are held until all submissions have been reviewed. [Casey just had a situation he posted about - he'd submitted the wrong version of an instrumental (the one he'd uploaded had vocals) and it was returned. He quickly updated his file on the hosting page... because the song was also submitted to another listing. But he just got the return this week - they'd reviewed the track with the vocals on it... even though he'd uploaded a new one a couple weeks ago.]You can replace your file anytime... but once the deadline has passed... there's no way of knowing when it will be reviewed. So we kinda play Russian Roulette by uploading new mixes after the deadline...
