"So Close" - Film Cue

Post by ideascapes » Sat Nov 29, 2008 8:55 am

Hello all. I am hoping to get some feedback on the song below. It was written and recorded as a film cue; the request from the music super was for a torch song to be played during a scene near the end of the movie, in which a man is reminiscing about a lost love (the relationship is the main story in the film). They asked for 1:00 - 1:30 in length for the scene, as well as a longer version as a candidate for the soundtrack release.DISCLAIMER: You'll hear my voice as a temporary placerholder; the final version will make use of a real vocalist that I will hire. Thanks in advance.Vince==================================http://www.broadjam.com/transmit/index. ... ======Cold now hereThat thing we hadWhere it went, I don’t knowNo I don’tBut you could have saved itIf you tried, tried real hardAnd then, you would be hereSo close, ummm, so close

Really.I like the slow, lazy mood of this man. A cool flow, with a nice lounge feel to it. That is actually what I pictured to be honest. I pictured myself sitting in a smoke filled lounge, watching you on stage singing this one. Even with the lyrics, I just didn't pick up the love vibe. When I read the description for the movie, I wasn't really hearing this. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.I really wish, with things like this, we could see the movie, or at least the scene they want the music for, THEN make the music for it. Makes more sense to me.You say the scene is at the end? To me, and this is just to me, I would go with a more triumphant love song. But, I don't know enough about the movie, and what you have may be exactly what they are looking for. Don't know.Did they specifically ask for a lounge type song? Just curious, and I may have missed it in your thread starter. I'm in a daze right now...I'm more of a rocker, so I would have went with a more 80's cheese on this one. Power snare and all. Kidding. But not really, but seriously, I'm just kidding, but not really.Aside from this possibly being used in a movie. I like it and would really, honestly, like to hear more of it. Let me know how it all turns out. Thanks for sharing it man, and again, your voice isn't bad at all bro.

Thanks for the feedback, Stephen. I get what you're saying about the '80's power snare cheese ballad. That could work...but not in this film.I should have stated that I've already been hired to do this music, so I have more detail on the scene than I listed here. Smoky lounge, music prominent; maybe sung by somebody on stage, maybe not. In any case, the style is what they wanted; I'm looking for comments on the production, harmony, melody, etc.I'll take more time to describe in the future. Guess I'm a man of few words.V>

Congrats on the gig man.

Hi Vince,I think you have the right vibe for a torch song here - and I agree that I'd be happy if I could sing like you do!Have you tried this tune with an accoustic rather than the electric piano? I think what you play on the EP would easily migrate and possibly offer a few more options for "torch-like" fills. The EP just didn't settle me down into the torch mood, if you know what I mean....Best wishes,Al

They want a male singer, stephen, but I'm thinking I might try a female as well. In fact, my bride might be able to pull this one off. They told me to lay off the verb, mostly, as they'll want to match the room to what's happening on screen. Sometimes they do weird things in post production with EFX automation too, depending on the camera angle and distance from the sound source. You're busy commenting tonight, Al, good to see you on. I have considered an acoustic on this and will probably try. The guide track they gave me had a Rhodes, so I thought I'd keep it in line with that. V>
