"Farewell" - Comments welcome!

Post by davekershaw » Mon Nov 17, 2008 2:23 am

Hi all. This is a track I wrote almost 30 years ago.I re-recorded it last year with acoustic lead.I've been trying to re-do the lead, but my old Fender acousticis just past it's sell-by date. I tune it open and it's fine, but it goes out on other frets. No way of altering the intonation. It sounds just terrible when recording. So, until Santa brings my new guitar I decided to do a Fender-bender version. Please let me know if it works, and what needs tweaking:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... tream=true

Really nice Davey. Can see this at the end of a movie.Liked to have seen just a little more sustain at the end of those notes. You know I am not the expert, but it seems very close to me.Thought of "wonderful tonight" at first, but that passed quickly. It is your own and it is very good.Anxious to hear other comments.paul

This is nice, relaxed. I'd bring the acoustic rhythm guitars up, they're kinda lost. And the bass. Until the keys come in there's almost nothing filling the space other than the lead.

Hey Dave, Slide sounds great! Neat little piece of work there!! I like the changes!! Maybe bring up the hihats and acoustics a bit. I could hear Elvis Presley join in on this one but I guess he's probably not gonna just jump up and, well... But still that's a good thing in my book.Kitz

Dave, nice piece. It did sound like the Clapton tune, but only initially. I can't hear much I would change. But... The strings seem slightly up in volume, but it doesn't distract from the overall mood and this is just a passing comment. Guitar and the bass sound fine using my headphones. Drums seem low and in the background, but it works. Production is full. I really like this.Foglyte

Good points all.Nothing major so far.I can see the Clapton comparisons; particularly the first couple of lines. Maybe something subconscious as I really like Wonderful Tonight, and I must have written this around that same time.Maybe it sounds more so on electric than on the original acoustic version.Wasn't sure if the strings were to loud.Rhythm guitars I kept down on purpose 'cause I'm not too happywith that guitar's sound - like I mentioned, but will look at the whole balance again.I've gotta get a new acoustic really soon, as it's holding up several tracks. Not sure what to go for though.I'm looking at maybe £1,000 / $1400 (would have been $2000 not so long back! Thanks for your time.

DaveDidn't even know that was a slide guitar. Duhhh? We talked before about getting "the right" acoustic. I started a thread and got some ideas as well.We both have the old Fenders and the sound is just not there. Let me know if you find a dandy.Paul

Would love to though, especially that George Harrison sound!I tried slide with a few open tunings for another track I'm doing, but it just didn't sound good on the recording.Stephen AV gave a good suggestion for an Alvarez acoustic, but I've not managed to find a supplier in the UK.Will keep you informed!update: I just looked back on that thread Paul. Some good suggestions. That Taylor video was helpful too.Wish I could play that clean! Guess I'll just have to start visiting the music stores and trying some out.

Nice piece of music Dave, I can't offer much more than that but I enjoyed the listen. I can almost hear a lyric in there too, it seems lyrically structured, especially the chorus. Is there one (just out of interest)? Linzi

LinziThanks Linzi. No, I never did set any lyrics to it.Mind you, I've only had thirty years to work on it! See! I've done it again!!Posted on the addictive thread, then checked for new posts!! You know, Ray Davies did a great song on his last album: "Is there life after Breakfast?"I'm doing one: "Is there life after Taxi?"
