Re: Country: The hick out of me!
Hey Shawn,The demo sounds great and I really dig the groove and overall energy. It's a toe tapper for sure. The title got me in and I think there is a great lyric there somewhere.I just have to say that it didn't hold up in the second verse for me. Country is all about story and you really didn't carry it forward in the second verse.I know you must have spent some serious coin on this, so I hate to suggest you go back to the drawing board, but I can already hear the screeners on this one.I personally would invest some more time on this tune because you have a good title and uptempo Country is always much harder to write, but it also means there is a higher demand if you get it right.Hope this helps,Cisko

shawn ....great energy! I love how it just drives forward!great voice - and well captured ... this guy has a country bari going on ....have to agree completely with cisko on that second verse tho - it really just came off as WTF??? .... and to carry that a bit further, the middle (bridge) was only a bit better ....but musically and melodically, you have it going on with this! it's driving, kicking and just flat out country rocking fun. lots of great instrumental licks, pro bed and fabulous initial production. I especially love the 70's approach to the guitars - that makes modern country what it is (that and the big kick drum and driving snare - which you got perfectly)the fact is, you really got my head rocking as I sit here and to be truthful, as I've stated elsewhere tonight, country is really not my first or second (or for that matter - top 5) style of choice.take the learned people's advice (not necessarily me) on making this one better - it's worth it musically. if that means re-writing the whole damn lyric, do it. it's worth that effort.

Re: Country: The hick out of me!
Shawn,Nice, catchy tune here. I gave it about four listens and liked it better each time.I personally don't have a problem with the lyrics in the second verse, although they pretty much repeat the theme of the first verse, just with the grown man instead of the kid... but to me that's reinforcing the title of your song. Oh sure, there will be plenty of people who tell you you need to have some big story line with a heart-wrenching twist at the end where you end up saving some kid's life at your grandmother's graveside, but those are the same people turning country music into overly-sentimental crap. This is basically a red-neck anthem, and as such I think it works fine as is. That said, Cisko may be right about the screeners, as they seem to have bought into this line of crap too, although my experience (limited though it is) is that the pros in the industry aren't as concerned about this if they think a song has a market.Excellent guitar work, BTW. for another 2 centavos . . enjoyed the energy and ZIP of the track, good feel. I did disconnect a bit with the 'story' during verse 2, it felt vague and a bit rote compared to the details (age, grade level) in the first. oh, and the guitar solo didn't strike me as particularly country, but it's hard to draw a line between 'rockin' country' and 'country rock' anymore!

Fun tune! This could easily fall into the ALT country genre. Nice rockin feel with a little bit of blues/rockabilly.I think the hook is hip and as Cam said, Its a rednack anthem sort of tune.I really enjoyed the listen. Lyrics are fine. you stay true to the theme throughout.Great V/C separation.M~

Re: Country: The hick out of me!
hey fish!nice to meet you, very nice rockin' c/w tune--i agree on the lyrics needing some tweaking, but the general them is right on, and i'm a believer that it's the music first, and it's there. a few comments...--the intro is a bit long, as i listen to all this as if we're all trying to get on the raydeeoh...--the line "say what they may" is a bit weak in the "may" dept.--i personally don't like the word "heck" here, what the hell's wrong with hell?? LOL...--a few more real examples that are not cliche about what you "believe" because you allude to it, would help this tune IMHO.great sh*t kicking tune, lyrically it needs more IMHO, as mine have been kicked in the teeth repeated by the taxidermist...but this is just MHO. all the best, nice to "meet" you, warrenps: now that i go back (and i do this too often, sorry) and look more at the damned TITLE..."hick" changes my hell comment only a bit--still like hell to catch "their" attention. but then again you'd have to support it more, but you have to support the hick as well...
