here goes . .
. . . my first time on the Taxi chopping block. I've been enjoying everyone's songs on the peer-to-peer, and adding my 2 centimes, so I figure it's only fair to open myself up to the same tender-lovin' scrutiny. sent this one for a blues listing ("wide variety of blues songs" various artists mentioned include Jimmy Witherspoon, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Mother Earth, Son House, Rory Block, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ma Rainey, R.L. Burnside, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, etc.). http://www.geoffreywelchman.com/images/ ... mp3(don't) be gentle

Re: here goes . .
I'm looking forward to what some real blues folks would have to say, as I'm hyper-unqualified. Here's what I picked up on, maybe folks can enlighten me if I'm wrong:- drums seem totally dry- then bass & piano have similar 'verb- and guitars much farther awayIs this how the genre stages the soundfield? Or should stuff sound a bit more in the same room? That's the only thing I could contribute...sorry...I really liked all the playing, and how the instruments support each other. I would think a wet guitar sound is really desireable, so perhaps just a bit of room sound on the kit is what I'm thinking of?Just my $0.02, as always wrdsnmuzik...good luck with the listing (did it have a critique included?)

GW,I like the licks and the format of the tune. There could maybe be a little more seperation in the keys - a little eq could help there - maybe shelve it off around 300hz so it's not so fat or try cutting 800hz a bit just to see if it sparkles a little more. Guitar sounded good but just thinking it might need to be a little more in your face not so much louder but more present. The 2nd gtr could stand a bit of pan so as to distinguish better. The second half break at the stop where the beat goes daa da it seems the bass drum drops out on the da if you know what I mean by that. My quicktime player does not show times so I'm sorry I can't be more specific. Like I said really nice tasty licks and just a bit of mixing could make the parts more definite.Keep in mind I'm listening on computer squeakers which will affect the way I hear it - so grain of salt my comments.Good Luck with it!!Kitz

wowza. thanks guys! these are some kick-ass comments.they're so good I'm not sure I even understand them. as in, so far I've kind of been mixing by 'feel'. I definitely need to up my game when it comes to the technical aspect. I'm not even completely sure how to 'wet' a track up . . add some 'verb?devin: good points about the spread and mix, good ears! I was going for something between blues, a jazz mix, and early 70s quiet-funk. I do like things dryer than some...I'll keep an eye on that.kitz: I'll check out the eq, but not how to make those specific changes on the keys. I kinda like the blurry quality, but I need to learn this stuff!thanks for the suggestions....feels good to have some serious feedback.

Nice track!!!!You got some good advice above....Wet does mean reverb.... depending on your DAW (recording set up) you might have a choice of different types of verb mix and match.... even a little delay on piano can help....EQ can be used to give separation between tracks as well... I'm just getting into this myself.... try soloing say the piano and cutting one freq at a time and hearing the effect on the sound... Of course you should pick a reference track... a tune in the genre and try to replicate the sounds.....This is pretty good... just a little tweaking my friend....Peace, GeoPS If you remix you can upload the new version for the sub as long as it hasn't been reviewed yet

Very nice vibe to the tune and reminds me of sippin on a nice frosty mug at some little shack. Definitely the only thing I would do is add some reverb onto that git fiddle and you got your self a improved tune. Most excellent jam...I like !
