MUCH BETTER. Such a fine guitar lick on "only God Knows" - you might drop the guitar fill on "if they'll ever get some rain" as it tends to distract from the vocal. At 2:48 the vocal could come up to the level of the solo guitar that's just finishing up.Great Song!! Keep at it!!Kitz

Hi Matt!I didnt hear previous versions of this song...i do think the vox are indeed loud enough...maybe though...(and forgive my lingo on this) the vocal mix could be more fat/thick...i dont think your vocals are thin..i just hear a bit more of that low end grit in the vox of a country song.perhaps there is a bit too much 'air' in the vocals?taxi friends, what would you suggest Matt to do to be able to makethe vox sound a bit more thick and/or 'closer' in the mix?(im asking because i want to learn how to make a more fat vocalmix also)rock on..er..i mean...country on!;)peacegeoff

MattThe tweaking is going well. I might be way off base here, but I thought I heard some pitchy harmony in the "bailing hay and cutting wheat" area. Do you have software to check vocal pitch. Most comments are directed to the vox because the guitar is excellent. I hate having to say that and appoligize if you are offended. (especially if you sang the harmony) Please prove me wrong:) It comes down to the vocals clarity/pitch is the only negative here. That is easily fixed right?Good luckPaul

Yes!!!! The mix is getting close now Matt...nice work. Looks like that cat gets another boot-free day. @Geoff: I've usually relied on playing the proximity effect a bit on the mic...(the DJ trick), but that's because the low end is all I've got (I'm a bit like our good Mr. Cash that way). I hope others can speak up about adding that effect after the vocal has been tracked?
Earplugs may be required for anyone over the age of cool.

Matt, I might be telling you trick that you already know but . . . Listen to a commercially produced song you would like to use as a blueprint. Pay close attention to the snare, kick, bass & vocal eq & mix volume. Then take everything out of your mix except for drums, bass, & vocals. Work on getting those just right. If you can get the relationship between those right everything else should fall into place a little easier (with some gentle nudging!) -

Thanks everyone.Youre right about the kit. I was so concerned about the vocal presence that the drums got lost. I think this is easily fixable.Feak. Me and buddy Mark were BOTH off key in spots. Since I dont have vocal pitch software we will re-track the vocals. We are both old school singers and we just need a couple more rehearsals to really nail this.Im pleased with the sound, Now that I have the vocals in the ball park Ill concentrate on the rythm section more.IN ten years I might be a decent engineer. Thanks all!M~

Love this tune man. Great vocals for this tune! The kick is destorting my studio nearfields, I'd eq and check volume levels. Are you mixing with a sub reference? '-) wta
Music is like oxygen, you can live without it but not for very long...
