Repost of "Get There"

Post by wignelson » Sat Oct 25, 2008 2:43 am

I posted this in Listings and got two responses that sounded encouraging. This got an 8 and the rest 9's when I submitted it in C/C.The drums were poorly done at that time and the screener mentioned that I buy EZ Drummer or something.I had a human do the drums and I think I'd like to re-submit it both in C/C and in A/C.I'd be glad if you could give me an opinion whether or not I'm wasting my money. You can make the case that it is not broadcast quality; (like all of my stuff) however, I always pitch songs and never artist listings.I'm too old and fat to be a performer, all I ever wanted to do is write. My one fear is that I'll get the same screener and he'll say, "been there, heard that," and not even notice the new drums. Here are the lyrics and the link to Soundclick:http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 9&q=hi“Get There”By Louis E. Nelson c. 2008(1st Verse)Within a room of players - she had an angel’s faceAnd she passed the guitar over to the next to take her placeHis hands laid down a melody on the golden strings that rangAnd one by one they all began and this is what they sang, they said I’m gonna’(Chorus)Get there . . . yes, I’ll get there . . . I know I’ll get there in time.Yes, I’m gonna’ get there . . . I know I’ll get there . . . I know I’ll get there in time.(Refrain)It was like they opened up a door, and that I would be back for moreI knew what I was looking for was thereForgive the ones who’ve done you wrong, He teaches peace and walks alongAnd you can thank him for the song He shares, all you gotta’ do is(Chorus)Get there . . . yes, get there . . . all you gotta’ do is get there . . . get there in timeYes you’ll get there . . . I know you’re gonna get there . . . you will get thereYou’ll get there in time(2nd Verse)I opened up my eyes and I’d been sleeping in my bedAnd all at once was sorry it had all been in my headBut long before the sorrow brought a teardrop to my eyesI realized that he who walks beside Him never dies, and I know I’m gonna”(Chorus)Get there . . yes, I’ll get there . . . I know I’ll get there in time . . . I know I’m gonna’ get there . . . yes, I’ll get there . . . I know I’ll get there in time.(3rd Verse)I looked across the water and the sky was burning downI saw the children crying but I could not hear a soundI prayed for a messiah that he help me understandHe said I cannot love them fore I don’t live in their land, but he said I gotta’(Chorus)Get there . . . yes, get there . . . I know I’ll get there . . . I’ll get there in time(Closing Phrase: You know we’re gonna’ get there in time)

Wow, getting 8s and 9s is no easy feat Wig! Personally, I think the recording is at least broadcast quality. The drums sound fine. I don't remember how they were before, almost need to do an A/B to tell. I thought maybe they were a bit loud in the mix early on, but don't quote me on that. Let's see what others say first. Cam

Seriously!I like your voice, wig. I'm quite partial to Mark Knoffler and I can hear some similarities there. I'd certainly encourage you to take a listen to some of his recent records (Rag Picker's Dream, Sailing To Philadelphia for instance). I can hear a celtic backdrop in his music as well as yours, along with the more present Americana/Country/Bluegrass roots. Listen to his production, how he frames the voice with the instrumentation, etc. He's a good cat to learn from.A few times I felt like the performance here was not quite up to snuff - background vocals not in time with the main vocal (attacks & cutoffs). It stuck out. But the biggest drawback to me along those lines was that the main vocal wasn't very free flowing - the phrasing seemed a bit too locked in with the beat at times. We don't talk in static rhythm - we flow for emphasis, in enunciation and in speed. The best at this I've heard (imo) is Sting and James Taylor. Phrases can hang over a beat, finish early for effect, that sort of thing. It can take a long while to get comfortable doing, but getting freed up to any degree is good, imo.Overall, I can see why you received high marks. It's a good hook and still stuck in my head (and that's the point isn't it?? )Best to you, brocb

I really love this song! IMO the lead vocal is too soft and is sometimes heard less than the backup. It sounds like it may have come up a little around the 3rd verse. I'd kick it up with a little reverb and see what it sounds like. The lyrics are so nice that they should be heard! Drums seem a bit too full acquiring a bit too much of the sonic spectrum. More EQ may be the trick. This song is worth the xtra effort in my book!Kitz

Hey wignelson!Don't listen ta' much country (except what folks post on the forum here), but if ya' changed the drums then they sound good ta' me. Only thing that bothers me is the same tom roll over & over. THAT needs a little variation from time to time, IMHO. That's all I can give ya'. Hope it helps. Good luck to ya'!I-468
