I really liked the rawness that came across in what Mark did. more than technical precision, I think that's what it really needs.wig, the connection is this: people are put to death in electric chairs. the wood itself has no connection and I don't think there's anything in there to suggestion that there is. the images to look at are the notches in the branch, mounds of stone and what posses do.Gotcha, Robert,Sorry if I tried to read a connection into the hanging tree actually being part of "Old Smokey." I live about 30 miles away from Stark, Florida. The home of "Smokey." It got it's name from a guy forgetting to wet the sponge on the prisoners head. Bad move.I know what posses do, they run down horse thieves and string em' up on the "old mystery tree." Do they then put a notch in the tree, or is the notch so the rope won't slip.In either case, cool lyrics to the song. Very visual. You are a gifted lyricist. Thanks for sharing this, Wig

Re: Mystery Tree
thanks wig...the notches would just be from being worn by the rope.

Re: Mystery Tree
I got a connection between the tree and the chair. The electric chairs were made of oak. White oak and Red oak typically.I think Grandpa made this connection in his mind and thats when he knew it was time to take that old mystery tree down.Just my perception but maybe...............................?

Re: Mystery Tree
Matt, the lyric never mentions that granpa ever saw or thought about the chair. the lyric is set up this way:child plays on hanging tree...granpa destroys tree.child grows up and sees kids playing on an electric chair at a museum and realizes why his granpa destroyed tree.
