Does this fit the listing?
Someday I know I'll get the right song in the right listing. This song is called "Fire and Life," with which I asked for help placing before. The comments here in TAXI were that it was in the style of Gordon Lightfoot. The listing doesn't specifically mention Lightfoot, but other artists like Lennox and Sting sing similar songs to this one. Please tell me if you think this has a chance. Thanks, Wighttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=171327&stream=true LISTING -- ADULT CONTEMPORARY SONGS in the wide range of Michael Bolton, Barbara Streissand, Seal, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Whitney Houston, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, etc. are wanted by an established Music Publisher in Los Angeles. This company specializes in Film/TV and has signed & secured placements for many TAXI members. While the stylistic approach can be widely varied, they'll be looking for original songs that have a "timeless" quality and overall tone - no covers, please. Lyrics should be universal enough as to apply to a variety of situations/scenes/characters. Performances and the sound quality must be excellent (solid demo recordings are okay as long as the quality is there). They offer a non-exclusive, 50/50 split deal - you keep your original copyrights. Broadcast quality needed. Please submit one to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received by November 10, 2008.TAXI # S081110AC “Fire and Life” By Wig Nelson c. 1979 I met the death angel on SaturdayThe future was weighed in my eyesA chorus of sirens were calling meThe sun had just started to rise(Chorus)And they sang, don’t give your lovin’ too lightlyMost of all don’t you hold backThe window to water was part of meWith sleep pulling down on my eyesThe birds of the ocean awakeningWere color and life to the skies(Chorus)Before me the floor was a photographIt held every drop of my pastReflections were painted with emptinessThe years end up rollin’ too fast(Chorus)A woman appeared by the waterlineAnd harmony sailed in the breezeAnd visions of her eyes were all of meAnd find me whenever they please(Chorus – repeat last line)

This really does bring Gordon Lightfoot to mind. Not sure it's along the lines of the artist in the listing although I'm not familiar with Josh Groban. It's a good song & I'd think I'd probably be inclined to through the $5 at it & "takes me chances" (that's why I'm always broke!)

Hey wig, this is a really nice song. Your voice reminds me of early Cat Stevens ("Matthew and Son" period). I like the odd meter bars. What I don't hear is a strong hook which would give the song a more contemporary sound.Steve

Hey Wig!I like this song... I'm with Bill in that I don't think it really fits with the artists listed, and doesn't really go into the A/C genre as this is pretty folky with the nylon strings. I will agree that Lenox and Sting have a similar writing style (and may even have songs similar to this), they usually make it A/C with jazz elements and fuller arrangements that include more musical hooks.I do like the tune however, and can understand why you asked!

Re: Does this fit the listing?
Hi WigI stumbled across this and enjoyed listening to your tune. I'm more of an instrumental composer, but I will say two things stuck out, to my ear. First was I'd back off the vocal reverb a bit. You have an intimate, nice sounding voice and I think the song would profit from hearing it more clearly. Second, this is just my own impression, but I really wanted to hear another voice or more in harmony in the chorus. Your lyric refers to a chorus of sirens and you sing "and they sang", then I just hear the single voice. It's not just the lyric reference though, I really could hear more voices! I believe the guitar could be tightened up a bit in a few places, and the string arrangement as well. Perhaps you could leave the strings out at the beginning of each verse and let them come in gradually, then with more gusto in the chorus. Perhaps they could even mimic the sounds of sirens if you don't personally hear a harmony voice. The solo section could have profited from a single violin really soaking the melancholy for all it could get! I wanted to hear something step forward. All in all I really liked the feel of your song. Unfortunately, I don't think it is right for the listing. I was at the rally last year and can honestly say that probably the most important thing I learned was to really work on identifying what constitutes a certain genre. Pour over the "ala" listings. Listen to tunes by the artists listed then work your arrangements with their style in mind. I'd agree with you that this is more in the lines of a Gordon Lightfoot style song. That is not to say that this song in particular does not have the potential to be done in the style of the artists listed. It's a good song, IMO, you might just need to re wrap it!Good luck!Mewman
