Can you hear the noise?

Post by vicky » Fri Sep 19, 2008 9:59 am

Hey everyone....I got this in my critique recently....and I'm not hearing the noise....does anyone know what I'm missing? or how to fix this?Quote:Almost too much noise here (listen to 0:05 - 0:10) on headphones...! This seems to be a function of track compression since the noise only comes up in the quiet sections (but I might be wrong). I have returned less noisy tracks for being less than broadcast quality, but this music is too good. Crap... 1:15 is just pure noise (and not the good kind!) Remix or remaster this, please!www.taxi.com/vickythebassplayersong "Morge"I also just got an email today with a deal for this song....so I really need get rid of this noise...I'd like to know what sound problems are going on...thank-you so much....can't wait for the Rally...vtbp

Sorry to tell ya...It even stops abruptly at about 19 seconds, just for a half second, so you can tell it's really there. And at 1:15 there really is a lot of hiss. Sounds like compression hiss.Good luck with it. Turn your instrument tracks off one at a time, 'til you find it. You will.

It sounds like it's been remastered too many times with some kind of leveling thingy. And it was a problem track that got increasingly normalized and the noise floor just louder and louder with each remastering effort. Guess why I recognize that sound. If the hissy sound isn't in the 2nd previous version before the one you've uploaded. Then it was that your last remastering effort that created the noise. I don't think it was tho, because the noise cuts out at 19 seconds. That would lead me to visually look on my arrangement of tracks screen to see which track is not playing at 19 seconds. Did you automate a track to be muted @ 19 seconds?I just listened again, I thought maybe it was the lead synth sound you started the melody with. (wow it's grungy and cool) But I can't tell for sure. It might have been the hiss from the tom fills too. You'll find it. Just look and see what turns off @ 19 sec.

Wow Vicky, this is a good track! I don't hear the noise but that doesn't mean anything. My ears are so bad from years of loud rock n' rollin' that my wife has to wear earplugs when we watch tv. Steve on the other hand could hear a pin drop at a Zeppelin concert (but I still have hair . . . HA!)

Hey VickyGilbert has hit the nail on the head. I hear it very vividly as well.If recording the parts over is an option, by all means do it. What a fantastic track! Also, if you dabble with studio based software, there are many programs out there that can fix issues such as these. One that I use allows you to isolate a part of the song with the "noise." It will then recognize the frequency and allow you to remove it from the entire track. But you have to be careful using this method. You can also lose important aspects of the song too if they happen to share the same frequency. By the sound of this track.. ..I would simply redo.Remember when you are recording each individual part to have the gain maxed to just below the point of clipping. This will help reduce noise in the future. P.S. Almost forgot, be sure to post the new version so we can have a look see! Great tune!

Thanks all.....I used to never use compression on individual tracks, because I didn't know how....but...I figured it out, and now over compressing is becoming an issue......me ears aren't trained to hear this yet, so I will be listening...and listening...and listening....Thanks for all the help...I know what to do now....Stephen...welcome to the forum....Vicky

hi vtbp!!yeah the highs are too high to my delicate ears. that's one issue and separate from the "noise"i DO hear a buzz throughout when it does quite down, and early on, can't you hear it? it is IMHO one of your midi tracks (or more of them), this has happened to me before, and you can see it on the screen usually as just a bit of a "bar"spike on the track or tracks that its's on., when there is suppposed to be silence...what i do on my primitive equipment is just find where it starts and "erase", and sometimes (and in your case it may be extensive...) it takes a while...that's all i have, but i hear it too, sorry, it's a cool piece....the best, see my PM, which may or may not help...!warren
