I should be ashamed!
I had a few hours free yesterday to work up something & figured I'd give another shot at the "Motown/R&B/cover" listing. About a year ago there was a listing for contemporary surf rock (or something like that). I listened to the alas & came away with the thought that to me they sounded like the B-52's w/out vocals.Soooo, I had this drum track from the surf -rock & sorta manipulated it a bit and recorded this version of Mustang Sally. I always hated the way cover bands ruined this song . . . now look at me . . . http://www.billgaunce.com/song/95

Nothing to be ashamed of here!Love the drums, and that effect in the background. What is it? That squeaky thing on the beat - sorry to get technical!I like the vocals too - lead and backing.Hey Bill. You nailed it!!This is one of the best produced tracks I've heard posted. Really!Well done! Dave.
I put the kettle on, it didn't suit me.

Re: I should be ashamed!
Daggone Dave, Thanks! That squeaky noise is actually fret noise! I had the compression crakned to "insane" & it was causing all of this weired noise. At first I was going to try to get rid of it but then decided I liked it . . . sounds sorta like vinyl "scratching" or something (at least to my warped brain). It seems like a rite of passage for cover bands to butcher this song. The original is "untouchable" as far as it's groove & vibe goes. This was fun, I only wish I had more time to mess up a few others!

billThis has a whole new twist. Played this in a band for ten years. I like the way you did this. Crowd used to love to dance to it.The original has a laid back approach, but yours keeps coming at you.Might be a little long?Enjoyed this, thanks.Paul

Re: I should be ashamed!
hey bill--well since i've always hated the original of this tune (don't string me up folks...) i finally like it, dig the fret thing--and you always complain about your drums, but man i think you're getting that down now, no?i like the whole thing, i know it may be "rough" to you, but i'd like to hear your vocal just a bit more up front and the guitar. i dig the "clapping" in there as well, just one listen. good backing vox. and i agree with pablo, might be a tad long.very nice work--AGIAN!the best, whps: and man, if this is from a few hours free, well never mind, it takes me a few hours to figure out my boss machine!!

Bill...I tried to listen...but it wouldn't play....am I too late on the thread?Mustang Sally is a song people love to hate, but still wanna hear....Adding a new twist to a song like this is a great idea....I'm always concerned about drums, as well....my break down is on time is usually....30% on drums.000001% on bass30% on everything else40% fixing mistakes, mixing and mastering...sorry i couldn't listen, vtbp

Re: I should be ashamed!
Hey Bill!Good treatment for this song! It kind of started off for me kind of like a Smash Mouth version, and I was really groovin' on it... I don't think you went there enough with it though, as after the first verse it didn't really build into anything more than how it started. And maybe it's because you started off so hot that I feel that way. But I would have really loved a big breakdown section, maybe throw in a little organ to break up the guitars (or other instruments), and maybe a switching up of the guitar rhythms to freshen the sound part way through. Don't get me wrong, it's got a good groove and it's a fun version (lots of great percussion and vocal parts), but I think this one falls just a little short of fabulous. With that being said.... to me, it may not quite be a home run, but an easy stand up triple! So don't let me deter you from submitting to the listing... because I still think it's a solid updated version of the tune. Oh, and I'm with Warren on your vocals... they need to come up in the mix more. Cheers,Z

I love the fret noise. Defintately sounds like a DJ scratching on it. Hell of a nice twist.Every club band around here did this tune forever. I hated it worse than Mony,Mony. This version I can listen to.!!!
