New Age Instrumental...whatya think?
I'd like to submit this piece for the New Age instrumental listing. I'd like to get some feedback on the appropriateness of the piece. BEWARE! This piece is 12 minutes long! How do you feel about submitting a piece of music that long? I've done yoga/meditation CDs and it's very common for each piece to be 8-15 minutes in length. Is it too much to expect the screener to listen to the entire piece?A little background: This is a modified mix because the original piece had excerpts from a poem by the great Persian poet Rumi entitled "Everything is Music" read throughout the piece.Everything Is Musichttp://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_id=1594 ... anks!Steve

As far as the time element goes...maybe it's a good thing or maybe it's a bad thing. It does give you more to present to a library if you're fowarded....it gives them a lot to work with....they could find an array of snippets they like if it gets placed in a movie for instance. As just a song on its own, I don't know....since it might be for meditation purposes, it's possible that length doesn't matter as you say. Maybe some of the composers will check in here and give you their thoughts about the length of the piece since I don't submit to those listings.

Steve, it works for me. Fresh perspective. Interesting approach. Builds up nicely. The voices are used effectively and come in at the right time - not too late. Tom

Hi Steve;First of all, Rumi is my favorite poet, so I'm pleased to hear a song based on one of his poems. (BTW, would you be willing to post a copy with the poem being read? Or do you have it for sale online somewhere? I would love to hear it!).One of my favorite musical experiences was hearing Coleman Barks reading Rumi poetry, set to music improvised by The Oregon concert (made up of people from Paul Winter's Band). YUM!But back to your song . . . Very nice! This song has an overall "deep" feel, which fits Rumi very well, although it has a bit of a darkness to it that makes it a bit more movie-ish than New-Age-ish. The instrumentation and vocals work nicely, and I would vote for your sending in the entire song. Cause New Age is all about time and space . . . !!Nice work!Suz

Thanks to everybody for listening to this piece. I know that 12 minutes is a big time commitment so I appreciate it.Chits...Since it's long I'm hoping that a library might look at this and think there are multiple edit points to choose from. I know it's a little suspenseful sounding but I also know that it will work in a mediation setting.Teashea...Thanks for thinking the voices are in the right places, hopefully not overused.Silvercord...Yes, that is an e-bow I'm using. Although I haven't mastered it, I find it very effective for this type of piece. Distortion, feedback, and reverb also help a great deal.Suz...Thanks for your comments. I never heard of Rumi before we did this. I thought it was fabulous. I've uploaded a version with the poem for you to hear. It's at myspace.com/emodevomusic. The original version is almost 2 minutes longer! It's a bit more percussion heavy. It was meant to be included on an album project that is 90% done and we've been sitting on it for almost 3 years. After revisiting all of the tracks I'm re-energized to finish it! Keep you posted.Steve

It an electronic magnet that you would hold over the pickup in place of a pick. It causes the string to vibrate much the same as a violinist's bow, hence the name e-bow. You can sustain notes indefinitely. Accomplished e-bow players can play arpeggios and such but I've not gotten that advanced with it yet. It's a fun toy if you don't over use it.Steve

That is SO COOL!Think I'll have to get me one of those and play with it!Thanks for educating me (and not killing me) . . . !!SuzP.S. Can the eBow be used with other electric stringed instruments, e.g. Bass? That might be fun to tinker with . . .
