Basic Black

Post by teashea » Fri Sep 05, 2008 4:08 am

Here is a new song that Bill Creel and I co-wrote. Bill recorded it at his 10 Acre Recording Studio.http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... 6861858Any comments are appreciated. Thanks for listening.TomBasic Blackc/ Thomas SheaThey say he looks good in basic blackA leather jacket and a cowboy hat.Walking down the street like Jesse James. The outlaw part fits him I guess. He’s never been like all of the rest.He wears only basic black. There’s been a lot of women he’s known. Each has a story of her own.The endings are pretty much the same.He is a merciless man.Never been to prison; he avoids the law,But that one fact won’t tell you allThe things that you need to know.He breaks hearts like window panesAnd counts those hearts like drops of rain. His soul is basically black. There’s been a lot of women he’s known. Each has a story of her own.The endings are pretty much the same.He is a merciless man.Instrumental breakA life like that is hard to explain. Now he’s riding empty on cold dark trainThinking about all the hearts he’s broke. His past is turning back on himAs the train moves down the track. He’s got nothing - nothing but basic black. There’s been a lot of women he’s known. Each has a story of her own.The endings are pretty much the same.He is a merciless man.He looks good in basic black..

Hey Tom,I think it all depends on what your goal is for this song.If its for your own album, it's great.I really like it and everything sounds good.If it's for TV/Film listings you'd be limited to Folk/Country/dark themes. If you have Artists pitches in mind, you're severely limited. But the overall vibe is good and it sounds very polished.

Hey Tom,I'm now guru at Country or anything in it's area, but I really liked your track... I'm listening at work so can't comment on mix etc... something about it reminded me of Chris Rea- Road To Hell...Good luck and Take CareB

I'm no country music expert either, but I really liked this song. It reminded me of a song from my youthful days called "Big Bad John." The production - performance, arrangement, and vocal - was excellent.Richard

I like it Tom. I do hear the Chris Rea "Road to Hell" sound mentioned earlier, but that's a good thing. I'm not sure whether it would have any success in the current country market, but what the hell. It's good as it is so let it be. Someone looking for something a bit different to finish off an album might go for it, or perhaps an indie-country artist. Cameron

Hey Tom.... I like this song... great vibe, good construction, solid production.... nice job all around! If you're pitching this for tv/film I would only suggest you get a different singer for this. It's a Johnny Cash type of song... it needs the ghost of the real man in black -- or at least a great sound alike -- to go all the way (and thus get more placements)! No offense to this singer at all, but he doesn't quite resonate in the lower register as much as what I think is needed for the song for a strong tv/film submission. Then again, that's if you're submitting for film!Best of luck with it!

hey tom--i dig this sound, a johnny cash feel for sure, but actually a bit more subtle and polished--dare i say that? first thought as i listen is to pare down the mid instrumental--if for radio, it's too long IMHO.the verse's lyircs are quite good, and it maybe only me, think the vocal is JUST RIGHT FOR THIS! sounds like a better vocal of "the man" to me...very nice instrumentals in this BTW! simple and to the point, except...see above, it needs paring down in the mid...but i think you need to re-emphasize the chorus more, just maybe even give it one more line,"the endings are pretty much all the same"needs one more line IMHO before you get to the last line...won't tell you what it is on 2 listens, but it IMHO needs it.that's all i got tonight, the best, i like this a lot, warren

Warren, I appreciate the comments. Good to have your perspective on these issues. I hear what you say about the chorus. Bill's voice does work on this very well - thanks.Tom
