Metal Instrumental!!!

Post by boardman » Fri Feb 15, 2008 9:40 am

Hey guys.........this is my attempt at a heavy metal (Tool, Korn, Mastadon) listing. I just traded in my 4 string fret-less Warwick bass for a Gibson Les Paul and this was my first recording with it. Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated!http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... tream=true

Sounds Fat!!!! Which is good and bad . Might want to put a little more high end on the guitars...Cool tune... GeoP.S. I'm jealous, love Les Pauls.

Hello thereTool and Korn are considered Heavy Metal? I usually associate bands like Maiden, Priest, Metal Church...basically those bands from the 80's. But I guess for the sake of being able to let people know what to expect, it's appropriate.Anyway, on to my feedback...I think you should drop the intro (or maybe come up with a different one) and go right for that groove at :06. That is a NICE groove. It sounds even better at 1:24 for some reason. Ha! I can really get lost in that beat. I can hear Korn in that for sure! The part from :49 until you get back to that groove (love it) at 1:24 kind of sounds out of place with the rest of the music. It kind of sounds progressive rock-ish with a touch of funk. I'm not saying it's bad because I like that too, but I think if you are going for metal, it might not fit in.Did I mention that I like that groove? So, I think if you are going for Tool or Korn (not familiar with Mastadon) you should try to go for a more darker vibe. Build it around that groove; it has an air of menace to it.

Hey boardman,Agreed. Sounds like you could use a little more high end on your guits. They sound a little muddy. Could use a little more sparkle & sheen, ya' know what I'm sayin'? I do like the funk groove for sure, but you're kinda' movin' from the metal thing to the funk thing there, no? Might have to come up with more of a metal-type arrangement for that section. Personally, I like the intro. I like the quick burst of excitement & drama at the beginning. Just my opinion. You've got the drums laid out very nicely, I'll say. What're you using? Good job overall though!ibanez468

just my opinion: maybe a little less room sound on the drums?and I agree about the high end and the funk groove does kind of take away from the metal...cool metal groove in the beginning...good job...and good luck!

Thanks for all the great input, guys. I totally agree about the muddiness in the guitar sound and that's the first things that I will mix. As far as the "funk" section, I was sort of going for a Tool-like, "Schism" sounding riff, a la Lateralus, but with a strong funk backround and after playing in a band called "Funk Nugget" for 5 years, I sort of gravitate towards that "more funk than metal" sound. I'm going to work out some things and try to repost before the deadline. Thanks again for all the superb input!!!

OK. If anyone feels like giving it another listen, I did some mixing and I think that the overall sound is much less muddy/fat/bassy. As far as the song structure and style, I haven't yet changed anything but most likely will.Geo....I agree about the ET picture. Not the most attractive alien Here's the link........http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... tream=true

Much better, everything more defined.... for the record I liked the more hardcore funk break! Love when the bassplayer gets some love!! That's a regular ET? I thought you messed with it... Geo
