NEW VOX - NEW MIX, is it film/tv quality now

Post by deantaylor » Fri Feb 01, 2008 1:41 am

Hey Everyone,Based on your comments, VShane worked on his recording studio to eliminate 'room' noise, Julia did several more takes to get this one and VShane remixed. So, we'll ask again:Is this a film/tv quality record (song, performance, sound quality, mix .. everything)?http://www.mp3unsigned.com/showmp3.asp?mp3id=51859 [new mix as of Feb 6, 2008]We are thinking of adding harmonies to lift the prechorus/chorus sections. Good idea? If you know a vocalist who would be right for the job, please tell me who. Hi Dean,O.k...listened quite a few times and here's just one opinion....First of all, I am listening on a laptop at the moment.....but the vocal sounds quite dry and like it could be mixed in more? (maybe add some delay/more vocal effects?).I like the vocalist's voice/tone but I think there are a few tuning issues in places..... I've just had a listen to the backing track.....I think it's very good.....there's a chord however that happens the first time @ 1:18 secs that keeps attracting my attention! - I'm not sure whether it's because it's just a bit 'too' interesting for me...?!All my comments above/here are purely how I personally think it could be improved....I also wonder whether a slightly bigger production (bass + light drums maybe) could also make it even stronger. All the best,Rachel

This song would benefit a lot with a bass player or bass line at least I think. The mixing is quite dry but not bad I think and the quality of both the singing and the playing is very good to start with. You should be able to pull it into good quality, maybe missing some warmth. There is an extra non musical sound in the end, last seconds, from the guitar probably, I would personally eliminate that although sounds like that are part of music also.Nice song too.

Rachel, Stein,Thanks so much for your feedback. Our singer, Julia, and our sound engineer, VShane, worked very hard on this recording. They both have talent, but not a whole lot of experience, especially with acoustic music. They are trying to elevate their 'game' to the next level (film/tv). Your comments will surely help them!!!I can see where you are coming from on all these comments. I also thought the mix might be a bit dry. And Julia does have a few pitch problems from time to time and I think she had more warmth and pop to her vox in earlier drafts .. lost a bit trying to hard on the technical I think. Singing sparse acoustic is hard .. so much rides on the singer for the emotion, the energy, the chorus lift ...Gotta go listen to that cool cord at 1:18.Dean

Hey Dean, I think you guys should try to work Julia closer to the mic to bring out a little fullness & intimacy. I think that will also help eliminate what seems to be some "not so good" room sound that's present. my 2cents -

agreed. I think there is too much "room" sound in the mix, plus there are parts where the notes are a litte off pitch. With such a naked mix, the vocals have to be spot on, because that is the main focus.good luck with it!

Bill, B. Flat,Thanks. We appreciate your 'good ears' and the feedback. Julia and Shane took some of your advise to heart and got motivated to re-record, so we'll post a new version soon.Dean

Hey Dean! As far as the quality of recording, I think it is broadcast quality, though very dry. Just a little reverb on stuff is a good thing, emphasis on the "little".The vocals are the weakest link, I think. Not the singer, per se, though it is a bit pitchy in places. But my main point is that: thewordsneverstopthere'snobreakfortheear.It'ssoundslikeonelongrunonsentencefromstarttofinish.Itjustneverlet'sup.Phrasing is important in songs and the ear does need a break. Listen to a John Mayer song - specifically listen for the space. It's there. It's all over. The space and freedom of expression it provides for him as a singer is a very natural thing.I did like the song, overall. It's very hopeful.cb

CB,Thanks for the feedback. You might have a valid critique against the songwriting. I see where you are coming from, anyway. The song is very full, but I believe it can work this way (I've heard other drafts) and that songs like this can be very special when done perfectly, but they are very difficult to sing. I think Julia is finding ways to make it feel more spacey and relaxed. She is close, but I agree she probably has a little more to do there (or maybe it is just impossible to sing). We'll see. Another version is coming soon.Dean
