Re: Throw Me a Bone here
Quote:Hi all-I've read these forums enough to know that whining creates backlash, and that what I should be about is pitching songs rather than pitching a fit. However, to quote Def Leppard, "I got somethin' ta say!"First observation: Of all the people who've given feedback, only two have ever had the balls to post a link and brace themselves for very tough (albeit very necessary) criticism. In looking up the posts for all the others, the only thing they've ever done is criticize. So c'mon guys! Nut up and put yourself out there!Well, I'd have to say that your first observation is a little off. Far more than two people who gave you critiques have also posted their own stuff for review.I myself have posted around 7 or 8 pieces...two of which have been fairly recently. Jude3 has posted a lot of his stuff, hummingbird posted one not long ago, Ibanez468 just posted a current affairs/news instrumental, mazz has posted his stuff before, vickithebassplayer, a whole bunch actually. The songs they posted up might not have been related to the genres that you were shooting for, but that doesn't mean that they can't give you helpful advice on that genre or that they have no "balls." -Steve

Re: Throw Me a Bone here
hi...I was a Taxi member for over a year before I even looked at the forum.....I was so frustrated with "wrong for listing" returns, that I almost quit....I've been on the forum for only a month now, and my entire perspective has changed.....Most of us are brought up thinking our compositions should be so special that they don't fit into a genre...IMO if the music is great and you're hooked into an underground scene, this is how new genres are actually started....Taxi is not related to underground stuff....it is a business with specific boundaries.....your song writing can only get better if you spend time emulating others.....I know thousands of bass lines written by other players...that's how I learned to play.....Also thanks for the post....I don't want people to google and be able to hear what I have up on my Taxi page...I think I'll change my settings....good luck....Vicky with the twisted brain....

Quote:Taxi is not related to underground stuff....it is a business with specific boundaries that's one of the wisest statements I've seen on this forum. If more new members realized this, they'd be less frustrated. The market is *not* going to conform to you, you have to conform to It. Mind you, I had to learn this the hard way too. Most of us did. And yes, I thought 'conforming' to the needs of the market meant selling out my artistry and creativity. But I finally realized that's not true at all. I'm just packaging my artisty to sell, the content is the same.

NOW we're getting somewhere! LOL Thank you all for the input, especially you matto. I was hoping you in particular, and the other accomplished musicians in general would chime in here.Matto, your post was very helpful and educational to me. So much so that I wonder if you'd clarify something else in your post (at the risk of revealing my complete ignorance... aw hell I've done that already). You said that I "start off with a repeated I-IVmi6 progression". Dude I have no idea what that means. You also allude to "another thing that sounds quite dated is that quick I-IV-I at the end of some of your sections." Again, what does that mean?I cannot express my gratitude to this group for their willingness to share their expertise and contribute to my much-needed education!

Quote:The funny thing much more often is the opposite scenario. People come here and ask for their songs to be reviewed but don't reciprocate by reviewing other people's material. That is much more disappointing than what you mentioned.Point taken, and I am somewhat guilty of this. In my own defense, i don't feel terribly qualified to critique others. But I will try to contribute in a more meaningful way to this.

Re: Throw Me a Bone here
When you hear people saying things like "I-IV-I" they are talking about chords and what number they are in the scale. So, for example, if your song was in the key of "A" then a I-IV-I progression would be "A-D-A." Also, depending on whether your song is in a minor or major key, each chord in the scale is usually specifically a minor or major chord. -Steve

So, if this is incorrect, please let me know. Casey

Re: Throw Me a Bone here
Quote:Casey,Not to sound like I'm nitpicking, the chord built on the 7th note of the scale is "half" diminished to accomodate the A natural in the C scale instead of the Ab in a B dim chord. This comes into play if the harmonized scale is extended to seventh chordsThis is my contribution to music theory for the month. ChuckYou should nitpick... I believe the right chord is Bm7b5 ... my error... Editing my post.Casey
