Hate Me Save Me -- New Master

Post by aubreyz » Wed Jan 16, 2008 9:32 am

He/She who hath ears...Finally got some of the plugs on my wishlist. As an experiment with my new toys, I did a quick remix/master of Hate Me Save Me.Here's the old one, Mastered with a touch of OZONE (which I'm not real fond of).Hate Me Save Me - OzoneAnd the new one, with some of my favorite DUY pluginsHate Me Save Me - DUYI'm curious how these translate to 192k mp3. The differences may be subtle, but to me it's an important difference. Other ears would be appreciated.Aub

My ears aren't good enough to comment specifically. But generally, the song rocked my a** off! Nice work.

I think the second one sounds better. It's kind of hard to put in technical terms but the second one breaths more, sounds less squashed, can't say if it's the sound of the plugs themselves or the compressor/limiter settings. The first sounds like there might be a bump around the 2k area and sounds like everything's rolled off below 100hz or so. The second sounds more acoustic or open sounding or something, the drums sound more natural, less notched I suppose, and there's more separation between the instruments. Still both sound great, cool tune. Elser

Aub, in my Ultrasone cans late at night, I'd say that the Ozone mix favors the guitars and the DUY mix favors the drums. Also the vocals sound more out front in the Ozone mix.If you can get the drums to have a tiny bit more "deepness" in the Ozone mix, I'd say that's the overall vibe you're going for. In the DUY mix the vocals and guitars sound a bit pushed back to me and I don't think that's what you want. I know it's a tough dance to get everything to slam but I know you can do it. The second mix has a bit more dynamics and is a bit "softer" around the edges but it doesn't reach out and grab me like the Ozone mix does.In the Ozone mix I heard some distortion around the edges, particularly in the chorus. This might have been some compression artifacts from the mastering plugs or compression artifacts from the mp3 mangling process. You might back off 1 db and try the mp3 again.Fantastic sounding stuff, man!!! Tell Ponch to put his fingers on some ice cubes after he plays so he doesn't light himself on fire!! Damn!!Mazz

Aub, Great song! To my ears it definitely sounds like the DUY version is a whole lot better than the ozone. Whether or not that depends on the plug in itself, or the tweaking of the same I don't know. But what I do know, or at least what my ears are telling me, is that the DUY plug in shows less artifacts in the hi end area when rendered to mp3. There's also a thin curtain of muddiness hanging over the whole frequency spectrum in the ozone version. That's what I'm hearing anyway

Hey Aub,I had a nice post for ya', but my time expired while writin' the damn thing. But anyway, I mentioned that the DUY version is nice and beefy (which I tend to like) but it's missing the sharpness (hi's) of the Ozone version. It's like you've gone from one extreme to another, so to speak. The guitar player is kickin' a**, the vocals are slammin' (cool harmonies), the song rocks dawg! This song deserves your undivided attention, to get the eq balanced out. It's right there dude, I can hear it. A little more tweaking and critical listening, and it should be a wrap. Just my .02 FWIW. Excellent stuff man!!ibanez468PS--Now ya' got me listening to it over and over. Anytime that happens, it's all good!
